I enclose two telegrams received,
one from a committee of the Masonic
Lodge, the other signed by a number
of prominent citizens of Eagle Lake.
Texas; also letter from Dr. Paul T
Gordon, all relating to Rev. Hugh B.
Atkins, about whom so much has ap-
peared in the papers the past few
weeks.
I do not recall that I am acquainted
with the Rev. Mr Atkins, as his resi-
dence In my home county in Texas
has occurred since I have been In
Washington But. I am quite well ac-
quainted with all of the gentlemen
who Rent these telegrams, and with
Dr. Gordon, the writer of the letter,
and can assure you that they are
among the leading, most reliable and
prominent citizens of that section of I
the State.
• if course, I know nothing as to the
I guilt or innocence of the accused, but
these gentlemen who knew him so well
seem to have the utmost confidence in
him. and believe him to be either in-
nocent. or that some extenuating cir-
cumstance intervened, which might be
call the matter to your attention, with
the request that you cause it to be
given such consideration as your good

find that there are mitigating circum-
stances in his case, I sincerely hope
that the accused may be given the
full benefit thereof

thoroughly investigated, to the end

The funeral of Mrs. J. E. Martin,
who died Friday in Houston, took
place in Cedarvale Cemetery yester-
day at 3:30 p. m. The body arrived
from Houston on the noon Frisco.
Mr T. J. Taylor, of Van Vleck. was

some ploughing can be done bj the
first of next week if we have no more
rain. The farmers are very much be-
hind with the preparation of their
land but with the long season before
us there is ample time to plant ami
