Colonel Ashburn reports that stu-
dents Use many unique ways in earn
ing their expenses through the col-
lege. They wait on tables. conduct
hamburger and peanut stands handle
baggage deliver letters and packages
mow lawns et type in print shops
and work at other odd jobs. One stu-
dent earned nearly $400 after his
second year in college by working
two shifts of eight hours each per
day on a pipe line in an oil field dur-
ing the entire summer. He returned
to college in the fall with enough
money to pay.off all his notes.

CHOSEN AS NAME

MERCEDES Texas. April 28.—It
ha* been decided to use the name
Cano Grande Golf and Country Club
for the club which is to he located
between Mercedes and Weslaco and
it is to be used by members from
both towns.

laco chamber of commerce and Fred
Johnson manager tf the Mercedes
Chamber of commerce. They got to-
gether on the proposition and worked
it out whereby both towns would
have memberships in the club.
It is planned to build a well-laid-

longing to the club and to provide for
other features for its membership's
enjoyment.
A charter s being secured for the
club under the name of the Llano
Grande Golf and Country club.

SAN JUAN STREETS
ARE TO BE PAVED

SAN JUAN Texas April 28.—San
Juan is to get street paving 18 feet
wide throughout the entire residence
section of the city as the result of
of the election held here Tuesday
in which a h nd issue of $00000 was
voted by a almost two-to-one ma-
jority.
1 here were 84 votes cast tor the
paving program and 44 against. This
is expected to put San Juan on the
same footing as the other cities in
the Lower Ric Grande Valley.
The chamber of commerce also has
been re-organized here with a part
time paid secretary to look after the
development of the city and to take
care of all other matters pertaining
to the work cf the organization.
FAIRVIEW ADDITION
SOLD VERY RAPIDLY
RAYMONDVILLE Tex. April 28.-
Fairview the new addition at Ray-
mondviHe was sold at a rapid rate
here Tuesday when 410 lots were
turned over to purchasers within
three hours.
These lots were sold at an average
price of $45. The auctioneer was'
Col. Rufus J. Lackland and the pro-
perty belonged t-o E. C. Couch and
VV. L. Forbes. It is located four
blocks from the schoolhouse and
eight blocks from the railroad in the
southeastern part of town.

Mr. Crcmack recently acquired the
Vivier building at the corner of
Eleventh and Elizabeth streets. Both
buildings occupy prominent corners
in the business district.
The Stegmann building which
houses six business houses the tele-
phone exchange and other offices
and the Elks Club was erected in
1912 by the late B. (J. Stegman.
With the exception of making
needed repairs Mr. Cromack is
understoed to contemplate no
changes in the Stegman building.4

HARLINGEN IS TO
BEAUTIFY STREETS

HARLINGEN Texas April 28.—
Flowers that bloom in the spring or
any other time in Harlingen are go-
ing to be very conspicuous in the
future.
The city has decided on a beautifi-
cation plan whereby it will do the
grading of streets and curbs and do
the labor if property owners along
all of the streets will furnish flowers
to be planted.
Different flowers will be planted
in separated sections of the city
but all flowers on the street will be
alike according to the plans laid out.
Work on beautifying the city will
be carried out umier the direction
of A. V. Holm street commissioner.

Marrelli appeared in a farewell con-
cert at the Pittman theater Tuesday
right following several appearances

pleased as sjie did in her first ap-
pearance here and her sister. Mile.
Clema a mezzo soprano appeared in
; a solo number for the first time
Tuesday night.
They sang popular as well as clas-

ALAMO Tex. April 28.—The Ala j
mo community church program was
formally launched at a conference of
the church building committee and ;
a committee from the Alamo Boost- ;
ers Club.
Resolutions were adopted favoring
the erection of the church. The
meeting was well attended and there
was real enthusiasm in evidence.
Plans were discussed and formulat-
ed for a general meeting to be held
on next Monday night to be at-
tended by all Alamo citizens. It is
hoped at this meeting to reveal for
the first time the sort of building
that it is hoped to erect.
The proposed building will coat
about $25000.

Copies of the speech have been
sent to the Southwestern Bankers
Journal says the northern publica-
tion and the Northwestern Banker
will publish it after the Texas organ
has done so. The Southwestern
Journal is published in Fort Worth.
Mr. White an investment broker in
Des Moines came to the Valley on a
pleasure trip and became one of the
biggest boosters the territory ever
had. He made an eloquent speech
over KWWG extolling the virtues of
the Valley and the opportun ties
here. This speech has since been
printed in pamphlet form and about
Wi.OOft copies distributed.
TAKE 13 PRISONERS

Thirteen prisoners destined to be
incarcerated in the state penitentiary

James J. Hunter a Scot
was shipwrecked on the

SANTA MARIA. Texas. April 28.—
This community* was shocked Tues-
day morning when the word arrived
that Mrs. H. M. Mittle of Sonora.
Texas died Sunday. Mrs. Mittle was
Miss Afton Smith before her mar-
rage to Mr. Mittle about a year ago.
Her girlhood was spent in Santa
Maria and she was a graduate of the
Mercedes high school after which she
taught in the Mercedes school for two
years.
