Mr. Kempher was born in Gal-
veston on March 28, 1877, the son
of Harris and Mrs. Eliza Behr-
sheimer Kempner. He received
his education in public and private
schools and was graduated from
the University of Virginia with a
B. A. degree.
During World War I President
Woodrow W i s o n appointed Mr
Kempner to serve as field director
of the American Red Cross. His
jurisdiction covered the state of
Texas.
He was a member of the board
of trustees of the firm of H
Kempner, a director of the United
States National Bank, president of
the Merchants & Planters Comn
press, vice president of the Im-
perial Sugar Company and t h e
Sugarland Industries.
-Mr. Kempner was a member of
the Galveston Cotton Exchange, the
Galveston Artillery Club, the Ga-
veston C o u n t r y Club and4 the
Quarterdeck Club,
Many Interests
His many interests outside of
the state inchided presidencies in
Paragould, Ark, of the B e r t I g;
Company and the American Se
curities Co., as well as the Bertig
Cotton C o m p a n y in Memphis,
Tenn.
He served as president of ti h e
Galveston Orphans Home, the Le-
titia Rosenberg Home for Women
and was a director of the Gal-
veston Chamber of Commerce and
the Galveston Cotton Exchange.
He was a member of Temple B'nai
Israel, and past commander of
the Seventh Brigade, Texas Di
vision of the Sons of the Confed
crate Veterans,
Surviving are his wife, M r s.
Jean Bertig Kemnpner; his daugh-'
teir, Mrs. Mary Jean Thorn and
grandson, Daniel K. Thorne; wo
brothers, Isaac H. Kempner and
R. Lee Kempner; four sisters,
Miss Gladys Kempner and Mrs
