Program receives re-accreditation
President Barry Thompson, and
Dr. Herb Jarrett received official
notification in March that the TSU,
Bachlor of Social Work Degree pro-
gram has been fully re-accredited by
The Council on Social Work Educa-
tion (CSWE) out of Washington,-
DC.
The national accrediting body for
social work programs awarded the
Tarleton program the full cycle of
seven years, sources say. The reaf-
firmation lasts until February, 1996.
Dr. Jarrett, the director of the
social work program, came to
Tarleton, he said, during the sum-
mer of 1987. The program's total
enrollment at that time was thirty-
three students. The program was
also facing immediate re-accredita-
tion issues at a time when the
previous two full-time faculty had
left TSU in the Spring of 1987, he
said. The CSWE agreed to defer
evaluation of the Tarleton program
until the Fall of 1988.
Prior to this time, said Jarrett,
TSU had only received provisional
/e-accreditation for three year
(periods. Jarrett began revising the
program and writing a 289 page
self-study document due in
Washington in June of 1988. Mean-
while, he said, in January 1988,
Professor Velma Scott, a second
full-time faculty member, was'
hired. She assisted in the writing of
the self-study for social work, he
said.
By the time the on-campus site
visit occurred in October 1988, the
social work program's enrollment
had doubled and now has about
sixty-eight students pursuing a BSW
degree, Jarrett said. Two experienc-
ed social work educators visited the
campus on Oct. 16,17 and 18
.representing the CSWE. They made
a favorable oral report on Oct. 18,
he said, and later followed with a
complete written report which prais-
ed the program, curriculum, field
