M. MYERSTON,

A letter has been received in this
city by Dr. S. O. Young from Prof.
J. J. White of Lexington, Va., asking
that he would interest the citizens of
Houston in doing something toward
the construction of a memorial tomb
for the lamented Robt. E. Lee. Dr.
Young has very properly thought fit
to entrust the work of effectively res-
ponding to this appeal to the hands
of the ladies of Houston. We are
authorized to State that a commit-
tee of ladies, comprised of
Mrs. M. J. Young, Miss Carrie
Ennis, and Miss Blanche Sel-
lers, will on to-morrow, the 19th inst.,
(the birthday of General Leo) wait
upon our citizens to receive their
contributions to this little less than
sacred design. The sum of ten thou-
sand dollars is necessary to fittingly
complete the work in view, and we
hope Houston will give its share.
Galveston will respond handsomely
to the call, and we should not be be-
hind our sister, and rival, city in this
patriotic effort to honor the glorious
dead. If every man in* Houston
would give but one half dollar each
our offering would be fitting and
While it has been considered most
Democratic to relegate all questions
of internal improvement to the States
individually, we have constantly be-
held the federal treasury drained to
develope and improve the Northern
section of this Union, while the South
consistently rejected all such help.
The consequences of this unequal
distribution of the public funds is
apparent in a rich and powerful
North and a poor and feeble South,
We of the South are heartily sick of
this unequal distribution of the rev-
enues and deem it time that we were
obtaining some of the practical bless-
ings of this Union. Heretofore th®
boot has been on the other leg ; and
neither have our modesty nor our.
sentiments been respected. The fer-
tile valleys of the South have made
the bleak and barren North what
she is to-day, and now it is nothing
but justice that some of the golden
sands should be returned to us in
this our day of weakness and afflic-
tion. Our Congressmen are asking
for appropriations for Texas and
these should be cheerfully granted-
We hope that, like little Oliver Twist
they will keep asking for more untij
we get even with the greatest bene-
ficiary of the government. Galveston
harbor should be improved to
the full extent of its capabil-
ities, and a Ship Channel should
be constructed to Houston am_
ply sufficient to meet all the re.
quirements of commerce. Many
