The contest filed by Justice
of the Peace Jno. D. Newwsome,
Pfecinet 3 to have a recount-
of the ballots in the race with
Surry Turner. was decided in
District Court Thursda.
The reutrns in the frst pri-
mary. July 25, showed that
Turner had been winner by 5
votes, the count being 220 and
225.
Newsome only contested the
box at Simpsonville, where
more than half of the vvotes
had been cast. A recount was
therefore allowed by Judge Wal
ter G. Russell, and it was found
Newsome made a net gain of
one vote, giving Turner 'the
nomination by a margin of four
votes. This made the final
count, 'Newsome 221, Turner
225.
The person who voted the
ballot in question had original-
ly scratched Newsome’s name
Then he erased that mark and
scratched Turner. Judge Rus-
sell allowed the vote as intend-
ed for Newsome, to stand,
whereas the election officials
at the Simpsonville box had
thrown it out.
Attorneys for Newsome were
Sanders & McIntosh while Tur-
new was represented by Ma-
berry & Maberry and Judge M.
