Editor's Note
This special elections edition is a first for Annotations.
This issue is dedicated to the upcoming SBA elections in the
spirit of fairness. The purpose of this issue is two-fold. First,
to introduce all the candidates to the student body, and se-
cond, to inform the students about each candidate's qualifica-
tions and background.
All of the candidates were given the same set of questions
to answer, with an instruction to enclose a photograph if they
wished. Those who answered the questions and supplied a
photograph are included with the information they provided.
Candidates who did not provide the information requested are
listed otherwise. Candidates for each office are listed in
alphabetical order.
Neither Annotations nor the SBA is endorsing any can-
didate in this special elections edition.
The three questions asked each candidate were:
Í. What do you feel that you have to offer the student
body?
2. What would you like to see change at South Texas?
3. What activites or other experience do you feel will help
you to better serve the student body?
SBA requires time, effort from officers
in planning school's year-'round events
By Lynn Cherry
SBA President
Each student at South Texas is a member of the
Student Bar Association and pays a fee each semester
for the Student Bar Association activities; therefore
the officers that are chosen by the students are
responsible for the expenditures of these funds and
for the planning of activities for the students.
Activites sponsored by the Student Bar Associa-
tion for the students include the following:
• Freshman Orientation: Conducted in May,
August and January.
• Intramural Programs: Continuing from the
month of June until the following year in
April, covering the events of football, basket-
ball and baseball.
• Faculty-Student Picnic: Planned for each
September in order for the faculty and
students to get acquainted with each other.
• Professional Orientation Day: Held in Oc-
tober. Professionals in various areas of law
present programs for the students to acquaint
them with various areas.
• Halloween Ball: Held each October for the
students. Tickets are available to students at a
very slight cost which includes drinks and
entertainment. This year more than 20 prizes
were given away at the Ball.
• Student Directory: Made available to all
students. This year the Student Directory also
included the photographs of all students.
• Appointment of Honor Court positions and
selection of the Editor and Business Manager
of the Annotations.
• Blood Drive with St. Luke's Hospital: This
enables students to be covered, along with
their families, for a Blood Insurance program.
• Student Awards Banquet: Held each April.
The Student Bar Association is responsible for
selling tickets and for assisting the College's
administrative staff in the planning of the
function.
• Graduation Activites: The Student Bar
Association is responsible for selecting and
selling graduation announcements and getting
them out to all senior students. The SBA is
also responsible for working with the ad-
ministrative staff in the planning of the
graduation ceremonies at Temple E'Manuel.
• End of the Year Party: Planned for all students
in the month of May.
Obviously, the Student Bar Association is not for
an individual who is not available to put forth a great
deal of time and effort. Included in each of the ac-
tivities listed is a great deal of time and planning. For
those activities for which tickets must be sold, there is
usually a three week period where the Board Members
must be available daily to sell tickets to the students.
Board Members are required to attend meetings every
other week during all three semesters in which they
hold office. If they should miss three meetings during
any one semester they are terminated from the posi-
tion which they hold and another officer is selected by
the Board of Governors.
Last year more than 52 percent of the student
population voted in the elections. This year we hope
to see more than that vote. As you make your decision
as to which individual to select to represent you and
work for you, consider the time and effort those peo-
ple will be putting in and their commitment level. The
people who have decided to run for these offices are
telling you that they would like to work for you. Be
careful in your selections and give the best individual
a chance by remembering to VOTE.
Voting will take place Wednesday, March 28,
Thursday, March 29, and Friday, March 30. The
voting will be held in the hallway adjacent to the
library on the first floor, each of these three days,
from 12 p.m. until 7 p.m. Each student will have to
provide some form of identification in order to vote.
In case of a run-off election, this will be held Monday,
April 2 and Tuesday, April 3 from 12-7 p.m. in the
same location.
The counting of the votes will take place begin-
ning at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 30 in conference
room 129 in the new building. The observance of the
counting of the votes will be open to all students.
The ELECTION COMMITTEE is composed of
the following individuals: Lynn Cherry, Student Bar
Association president; Bill McCoy, editor of the An-
notations; Kerry Hagen, senior senator; Kevin Bell,
vice president of the Student Bar Association and
Barbara Pusch, copy editor and writer for Annota-
tions. The Election Committee is responsible for any
election complaints. Please feel free to contact Lynn
Cherry at: 428-1464 or 652-0995.
