Ten candidates announce for freshman senator
For the office of Freshman
Senator, there are ten candidates
who have announced: Luci Ait-
ken, Peter R. Br an nan, Peter M.
Capua, Peter Brenton Carpenter,
Shawn Hall, Lori Hood, Joe Al
Riddle, Thomas W. Sankey, Cur-
tis L. Soileaw and Dianne Zomp-
er. Two individuals are elected to
this position.
The two Freshmen Senators are
responsible for the planning of
Freshmen Orientation in August,
January and May. This includes
the scheduling of all speakers,
planning of the packets to be
received by each freshman, and
the planning of the reception
following the Freshman Orienta-
tion.
LUCI AITKEN graduated from
Southwestern University and ma-
jored in marketing.
Luci feels she has to offer the
student body "my enthusiasm and
positive attitude. I am a hard
worker and I would like to be
given the chance to bottle some of
my energy and use it toward help-
ing others strive to reach their
goals as I strive to reach mine."
As to changes Luci would like
to see, she said she would like help
change "the attitudes that other
law students have toward South
Texas. We have a fine school with
an excellent reputation for our
Advocacy Program." She said she
would also "like to see us receive
national recognition not only in
this area, but in our academics as
well."
Luci said her past experiences
include: "Student Foundation at
Southwestern University, Texas
State Coordinator for the Mid-
American Panhellenic Conference
Association, Panhellenic Repre-
sentative, executive vice-president
for Delta Delta Delta sorority,
committee member to Southwest-
em's Presidential Master Plan
Committee, and a candidate for
the Board of Advocates at South
Texas College of Law.
PETER R. BRANNAN grad-
uated from the University of
Oklahoma and majored in letters.
Peter feels that he can offer the
student body "broad representa-
tion of the freshmen of 1983. I
have sensible and fresh ideas. I am
eager and hardworking and like to
get things done."
Changes that Peter would like
to see are "freshmen getting more
guidance from a faculty advisor
and/or third year students (dur-
ing) their first semester." He also
said, "I feel that a system of stu-
dent lockers is important, perhaps
even hooks to hang coats on in the
winter. Security is another con-
cern of mine. My chief concern
would be to get freshmen adjusted
to South Texas as quickly as possi-
ble."
Peter said the experiences he
feels will help to better serve the
student body are, "In college I
was very active in campus ac-
tivities. I was highly involved in a
fraternity holding many offices
(including vice president). I was
also secretary/treasurer of the Na-
tional History Honors Society and
secretary of the Classics Society."
PETER M. CAPUA graduated
from Florida State University and
majored in finance.
Peter said that he feels that he
can offer the student body "per-
sonality, energy and enthusiasm."
Peter said that changes at South
Texas he would like to see include
"more SB A activities and overall
student involvement."
Peter said as to his past ex-
periences, "I was actively in-
volved in my fraternity at
undergraduate school." He also
served on the student senate.
PETER BRENTON CARPEN-
TER graduated from the Universi-
ty of Texas at Austin and majored
in government.
Brent feels "I am willing to take
the time to listen to the problems
and/or questions the students
have concerning our school and
am also available to be at school
during the day classes when other
candidates may not be available."
Brent said changes he would
like to see are "upgrade the food
and eating area in the lounge,
perhaps having a separate smok-
ing/non-smoking section." He
also said, "I would like to see the
SBA more accessible to the stu-
dents through a more involved
organization to distribute infor-
mation and receive suggestions."
Brent's experiences which he
feels will help serve the student
body are: "I have traveled to dif-
ferent countries and have learned
to deal with people in a friendly
cooperative way, without being a
person who promises more than
can be delivered." He also said,
"I have worked in the business of-
fice and presently work in the
library, giving me an insight to the
school functions."
SHAWN HALL is a graduate
of the University of Texas in
Austin and majored in economics.
Shawn feels that she can offer
the "time, energy and the desire to
promote the best interests of the
students." She also said she can
offer ideas providing students in-
creased opportunity to get involv-
ed and get the most out of their
legal education at South Texas.
Shawn said changes she would
like to see are "increased student
involvement from both full and
part-time students so as to make
South Texas more of a school
than a place to pick up required
law school hours for graduation,
longer SBA office hours and more
extensive outline files, evaluation
for courses and professors, and
quicker registration." She also
said she would like to see "more
accessible student advisors for in-
coming students, alternatives to
the present parking situation
which causes a crime threat, and
longer library hours on Sunday
evenings."
Shawn said her experiences that
will help are "U.T. Ideas and In-
teractions committee, Special
Events Committee (board
member), Texas Student Lobby
(lobbyist)." She also said that "in
addition to these three groups I
have also gained experience in
organizing and developing new
ideas by participation in various
community and recreational
volunteer groups."
LORI HOOD is a graduate of
the University of Texas and ma-
jored in accounting.
Lori feels she can offer the stu-
dent body her "leadership, de-
pendability, enthusiasm, ad-
ministrative ability." She is
"eager to promote the school im-
age and involve more students in
its activities."
As to changes Lori would like
to see at STCL, she would like to
see the following: "Freshman
orientation should begin the
minute of acceptance to the
school and not two days before
the start of classes."
She would also like to see "bet-
ter communications to the stu-
dents about the activities going on
at the school."
Lori said she would like to see
"more interaction between the
different levels of students. Too
often the first and second semester
students have no idea who the se-
cond and third year students are
and without personal contact they
walk around in a daze. There
ought to be an activity soon after
the start of school so students can
meet each other."
Lori's past activities and ex-
periences, which she beleives will
be helpful as an SBA represen-
tative, include: co-chairman of the
Student Involvement Committee
at U.T. While serving in this posi-
tion, Lori "accomplished keeping
expenses of the school down, in-
creased attendance at sports
events, and kept the administra-
tion informed as to the activities
and complaints of students."
Lori also served on the U.T.
Recreational Sports Committee as
a board member and for three
years was a member of the Univer-
sity Accounting Association. She
was a member of Alpha Phi
Omega, the U.T. Intramural
Committee, Scholarship Commit-
tee, Pre-Law Association and was
involved in intramural sports.
JOE AL RIDDLE attended the
University of Texas at Austin and
majored in electrical engineering.
Joe feels that "I can offer a
common-sense approach to stu-
dent government with fresh ideas
and enthusiasm. I can also offer a
significant amount of fortitude
that enables me to stick with pro-
jects until completed."
Joe would like to see "student
evaluations of professors that
would both give students the op-
portunity to express their opinions
and provide professors with reac-
tions to their teaching methods."
He also would like to see a
higher ratio of study carrels per
student in the library. Joe said
STCL needs "a more efficient
registration procedure and better
communications between the stu-
dent body and the Board of Gov-
ernors."
As to Joe's past experiences and
activities he feels "my position as
a clerk for a small law firm has
given me a working knowledge of
civil, criminal, probate and family
procedures. I have also had
leadership experience from high
school through college in areas
such a academics, band and in-
tramurals. All of these activities
and different jobs in engineering
and law have given me the privi-
lege of working and socializing
with many different types of peo-
ple."
THOMAS W. SANKEY
graduated from the University of
Tennessee majoring in political
science.
In response to being asked what
he felt he had to offer the students
of STCL, Thomas responded, "I
feel that I have the characteristics
of a responsible representative;
the ability to listen, discuss,
analyze and recommend solutions
to student body concerns and in-
terests."
As to changes at South Texas,
Thomas said, "I would like to see
the academic success of students
increase through the strengthening
of academic standards. In par-
ticular, I believe it would be ad-
vantageous in both their scholastic
and professional careers if all of
the courses which are tested on the
Bar be required courses at South
Texas."
As to his past experience and
activities, Thomas replied, "I
have served in numerous represen-
tative roles in both academic and
community spheres. At the Uni-
versity of Tennessee I served as
chairman of the Student Conduct
Disciplinary Board, president of
the College Republicans, and vice-
president of the International
Relations Council. This ex-
perience has given me insight in
how best to represent others' in-
terests."
CURTIS L. SOILEAW grad-
uated from Lamar University in
Beaumont, TX., and majored in
criminal justice.
Curtis said he believes that his
"experience in city government
will enable me to contribute to the
success of the SBA.
"I would like the opportunity
to provide new ideas and assist the
SBA in achieving its goals. I will
work hard to give the student
body representation they can de-
pend on."
As to changes at STCL, Curtis
said, "I feel that the Student Bar
Association should constantly so-
licit input from all members in
order to better serve them. It is
also imperative that new students
be made aware of the purpose and
goals of the SBA. This will ensure
continued success and encourage
participation from its members."
Past experiences and activities
that Curtis beleives will help him
to serve the student body include
"serving as a City Councilman
and Mayor of the City of Lumber-
ton, TX."
Curtis also served as a delegate
to the Democratic State Conven-
tion in 1980 and 1982. He is a
member of the Blue Key Honor
Society and the National Criminal
Justice Honor Society.
DIANNE ZOMPER is a
graduate of the University of
Houston and majored in French.
Dianne said the attributes she
will bring to the office include
"the energy, enthusiasm and the
creative imagination necessary to
bring about some positive changes
for the freshmen students."
Dianne said her "main concern
will be to instill some new life in
freshman orientation. I would like
to see future orientations include
an in-depth look into each organ-
ization and series of competitions
that our school offers.
"I would also like to initiate
question and answer sessions
throughout the semester to pro-
vide the new student with varied
counseling on subjects such as
alternative study methods and
course loads."
Dianne's past activities and ex-
periences include involvement in
"several organizations in which I
held positions of leadership and
organization."
Dianne has owned and manag-
ed a small business and "learned
how to work with people of differ-
ing opinions and backgrounds,
combining efforts to achieve suc-
cessful goals."

tion of Phi Theta Kappa vice-
president.
FLORENCE M. CHEEKS is a
graduate of the University of
Texas at El Paso and majored in
business administration.
Some of the qualities Florence
said she has to offer the STCL stu-
dent body are "leadership, ag-
gressiveness, independence,
maturity, integrity, honesty and
compassion.
"Above all, I can make deci-
sions and abide by them, and I am
a hard worker," she said.
Florence said she would like to-
see "more interaction between the
students and the student govern-
ment."
