Is Hostess for
U. D. C. Meeting
Mrs. Robert Gofner was
hostess for the Hannibal
Boone chapter of t h e United
Daughters of the Confederacy
recently, at her home on South
LaSalle. Valentine decorations
prevailed throughout the re-
ception suite.
Mrs. Earl Harris, Sr., first
vice-president, presided ovef
the business session.
Interesting facts relating to
the life of Abraham Lincoln
were the responses given to
the roll call. Mrs. Margaret
Cecil Johnson of Richards was
welcomed as a new member.
Mrs. J. T. Simmons, program
chairman, requested that Mrs.
Willie McCallum read an in-
teresting letter from her
grandfather, Mr. Kelley, writ-
ten to his family while in the
service of the Confederate
armed forces and situated in
Virginia. His keen sense of
humor evident in this epistle
denoted the wonderful morale
maintained in the Army of
the Southern states.
Mrs. J. Walter Smith spoke
to the group on the life of
Sidney Lanier. Her discourse
portrayed Lanier as a soldier,
poet and musician. His ver-
sality was most amazing and
indicative of the splendid
characteristics of soldiers in
those turbulent times.
A delightful social hour was
enjoyed in the dining room
where the refreshment table
featured the valentine oma-
mentation.
