,,THE ALUMNI FOUND IT ROUGH in its first game against Harvard's varsity soccer team
last Saturday morning. Former Crimson All-American soccer player Tom Bagnoli makes the

SOCCER TEAM TOPS INDIANS
TO KEEP IVY RECORD CLEANcape. They passed well, they ran like gazelles,
and they set up plays with precision. Chris
Ohiri scored first, at 2:50, butting the ball
past the goalie on a set up by outside left
Sam Thompson. Later in the period, Fred
Akuffo rammed another one in, and it looked
like the starting members of the team might
get some rest.
But then came a general letdown: the heat
slowed down the pace of the game, and the
passes lost their accuracy. The Crimson did
outplay Dartmouth for the rest of the game
but a number of potential scores went either
wide of the goal or over it. The Indians felt
more optimistic when they scored their goal
midway in the third period but Harvard
Coach Bruce Munro realigned the defense
after that, and the Crimson kept the ball in
Dartmouth territory for most of the remainder
of the game.
Despite the low score, Munro was not dis-
satisfied after the game. "A soccer team, as
in most team sports, is subject to streaks," he
explained. "During that first quarter, every-
one was doing everything just right. But, of
course, that type of situation usually doesn't
last too long." He praised both Akuffo
(Accra, Ghana) and Thompson (Toronto) for
their play.
While most of Cambridge prepared for the
football game on Saturday morning, the Crim-
son was beating a team of graduate members
of the soccer team, 3-2. Ohiri scored twice
and Cormac O'Malley (Greenwich, Conn.)
once in the victory. Last year's captain, Tony
Davies, scored both goals for the Alumni.
From here on in, the schedule gets much
tougher for the Crimson booters, as they face
the three other Ivy teams who have sights on
the championship. Next Saturday at Penn
they will take on a Quaker team that has lost
two Ivy games, consisting of practically the
same players who beat Harvard last year and
went on to tie the Crimson for the league title.
Then come Princeton and Brown, the two
other teams with no league losses. They meet
each other Saturday in Providence in one of
the key contests of the current Ivy race. The Harvard soccer team kept its Ivy
League record unblemished last Friday by
beating a rugged Dartmouth squad at the
Business School Field and although the score
was only 2-1, the game was not as close as it
would appear.
In the first period of play, the Crimson
played its best soccer of the year, scoring both
goals, and having several more narrowly es-

blown, but after being pushed back he recovered
enough to get over on a delayed-action lunge.
Dartmouth didn't get the ball again until
the clock showed 58 seconds to play, and after
one short pass, Kelly was smothered by Stephen-
son for a 12-yard loss and then Bilodeau made
a galloping interception on the final play of
the game.
