Mike Elliott, one of the country’s most demanded
studio and concert guitarists, will be here to
demonstrate and talk to you about the musical use
of signal processing. No “high tech,” or hype, just
an honest explanation and demonstration of how
you can obtain those elusive “studio” sounds and
much more.

I heard the Chieftains have just signed to do another
movie score (if you remember, they won an Oscar for the
music to "Barry Lyndon"). "The Lion of Ireland",
scheduled to begin shooting on location in Ireland next
summer, is about Erin's most famous king, Brian Boru.

everyone. In addition to new music out of Jamaica,
there is a lot of reggae music coming from London and
New York (a lot of which never makes it to Jamaica).
And then there's the Houston music scene. In Paul's
words "repetitious", at least what we can hear on the
radio. The commercial stations have stagnated, there's
just not enough new and varied music, not only reggae
but anything that varies from the norm - hard, heavy
metal type rock and roll, C&W and pop disco. All these
above mentioned styles have their place, but there is
just so much more out there!
Remember you can listen to The Prime Minister of Reggae
Music in Houston, Paul Mellowtone, on Wednesday nights
from 10pm until 12 midnight on KPFT - 90.1 on your FM
radio dial. Check it out! .
Reminder - I know some of the radio stations out there
put on reggae music benefits and dances from time to
time. If you want advance notice of these functions to
appear in the Public News please call or write at least
two weeks in advance and I will be glad to include the
information in the column. This goes for anyone with
any info that may be of interest to the public.

It was my pleasure to see The Lotions at Fitzgerald s
the evening of January 29th; it can be yours if you get
over there on Saturday, February 26th. I'm most cer-
tain they will have the place rockin' once again. If
you go, plan to dance ... and dance to a mixture of
copy and original works, such as Mr. Copper, Get Up,
Stand Up, Time Bomb, Pushin Too Hard, Legalize It, Dock
of the Bay (I was impressed-!), 96 Tears and many, many
more. Most definitely a fun evening.
The following are additional views expressed to me by
Paul Melotone in a recent interview.
Lover's Rock is now the more prevalent style of reggae.
Paul feels the trend is moving away from the political
format (the political scene in Jamaica is calming) to
music more geared to dance, love, good times, still
retaining the heavy rhythm of political rock.
Currently, according to Paul, the most popular reggae
bands in Jamaica include Challis, We the People (which
backs Dennis Brown) and Third World. These three are
currently dominating the scene as far as bands. Then
there's Sly & Robbie but they are now considered more
international - having played almost everything with
John Vandiver will be at Anderson Fair, Friday and
Saturday February 25th and 26th, and Mickey White will
be there Sunday the 27th. Loudon Wainwright III will
be at Rockefeller's on Monday the 28th (he's been long
overdue for Houston) and on the same night, over at the
Laugh Stop ... the Smothers Brothers.

Nanci Griffith, long time favorite on the Houston folk
scene (though she has recently moved back to Austin)
has announced the re-release of her first album,
"There's a Light Beyond These Woods", on the Featherbed
label. The original release was on B.F.Deal in 1977,
and if you have tried, as I have, to find a copy of the
collector's item, you gave up long ago. Featherbed has
also to its credit Nanci's "Poet in My Window" and Eric
Taylor's "Shameless Love". There will be a celebration
at Anderson Fair on Saturday, March 12th, hosted by Tim (
Leatherwood. Featured are many of the original
musicians from the album, as well as special guests
Eric Taylor, Lyle Lovett, Emilie Aronson and Wayne
Greene, and lots of surprise guests. Nanci will also
be at Anderson Fair on Thursday, February 24th.
