Few bands in the history of rock
and roll have altered its direction
so profoundly while receiving so
little credit as have The Ramones.
While the Sex Pistols will be remem-
bered as the founding fathers of the
pun k m ov em ent, it was Th e Ram ones '
1976 tour of Britain which truly
sparked the nation to a musical
revolt.
Rock in the 70's had become fat
and self-indulgent and promised to
drown itself in a quagmire of
technical excess. But from the con-
crete jungles of New York City came
four snotty youths bedecked in
leather jackets and playing three-
chord trash rock in the fine tra-
dition of ? and the Mysterians and
Sam the Sham. Initially reviled by
critics and booed by audiences, The

course, Jimmy Don Sm ith.

Peter Gorsch(who, with
Kenny Bobo, the only
former Cold Cut not mak-

Make no mistake about it. The
Ramones are the original punk rock
