"This is a tidal wave........
Say this a youth man at you microphone stand
A come fi guide every one out a Babylon
Make Jah Jah come with the wave rock them session
Say rock them in a Babylon true creation
'Cause this a tidal wave
This a tidal wave.........."
And so it is. The Tidal Wave has wiped-out the
Jamaican reggae market, and is now sweeping through
the states. Tidal Wave (Unicorn-UNIC-9510) is the
title of the latest LP release with Jamaica's Top Rap
Reggae and Rubadub toasters; Bobby Culture,
Brimstone & Fire, Louis Rankin and Nicodemus. "This
a tidal wave."
Here is America, it is called rapping (Check-
Grand Master Flash and the Furious 5, Gary Byrd); in
Jamaica, it's called toasting. "Sound Systems", such as
Gemini, Jack Ruby, Jahlove, are set-up in dance halls.
The Jamaican youth patronize their favorites, where
deejays toast/rap over the records. It's a rap reggae
party!
Since you may not be ready to travel to the
island, White Buffalo Multimedia brings the Jamaican
dance hall culture to you. On this album, reggae
toasters rap on current issues, historical issues, love
and everyday life, over reggae dubs. And for your
pleasure, accompanying the album is a lyric sheet.
You can toast with Brimstone & Fire, Nicodemus,
Bobby Culture and Louie Rankin. Rhyme on time
style.
Tidal Wave includes the hot shot cuts; "Goin
Home," "Big Big Bust," "Well Confident" and the
"tidal" cut. This album is live jive with real spills.
After Burnin' Down the House with The Talking
Heads on October 22 — Take your Head's ticket stub
back to Rockers on the 23rd and receive free admis-
sion to Howard Devoto, former lead singer of the
Buzz cocks and Magazine.
Having left the Buzz cocks complaining he had
to shout to be heard, Devoto joined Magazine - where
the band put out LP's like Real Life, Correct Use of
Soap, and their final album Magic Murder and the
Weather. Devoto's solo LP ( IRS Records) is tagged
Jerky Version of the Dream — 10 cuts - 5 on each flip.
H.D. is still very sensitive and insecure about the
world around him - his lyrics bleed menace and malice,
disgust and trivia. Devoto has been described as a new
wave Schopenhouer while, at the same time, labeled a
vain daydreamer.
I was amused with the cut "Way Out of Shape"
and realism to the lyrics "I've got a roof over my head-
you've got a gun in my back," AA-UNAA
Go catch the new show at The Comedy
Workshop, 2105 San Felipe at Sheperd. Titled "This
Show is Beneath Us (But We're Not Above Doing It),"
the show consists of a series of high-energy, fast-
paced sketches that do not mesh, but are each unique.
Cast includes Fred Greenbe, Superior Waterbed's
Ken Polk, Vicki Ferrell, Nancy Bacon, Mary Ann
Pendino and the red headed Andre Chinene.
An occasional reminder of Laser Magic at Burke
Baker Planetarium through January 1. Admission
$4.00 with no admittance after the show begins. Call
526-4273.
The First Bayou City Oyster Company Gumbo
Cook Off to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Associa-
tion will be held October 16 - noon to 6:00 pm at the
restaurant at 2171 Richmond. You can sign up by
calling Georgia Lile at 523-6640 or Bob Henderson at
MDA 665-5101. There is a $50 entry fee donation.
By now everyone must surely know of the new
Beatles album to be released by Houston-based label -
Richy Records and distributed by CBS. Ric Smulian,
president of the local label acquired the 1964-69
Christmas Fan Club tapes from Pete Bennett, an ex-
Beatle aid to Allen Klein. Supposedly, Lennon gave
the tapes to Bennett before his death. Yoko's not
happy - but the machine is still rolling. Ric's dream of
having his 1st release a Beatle album may come true.
Z-Rocks tour to NYC has been cancelled due to
unforseeable circumstances - but there is talk of a
revised l sts album with 4 or 5 new cuts and a revision
of The Punks a Teacher -oops sorry Guy.

buyer for the Cardi's chain as well as promoter for
area concerts, such as The Quiet Riot show to benefit
victims of Alicia.
