i Help wanted: reporters to cover news, events in
entertainment business. Particularly interested in
news writers. Must already be paying attention. Must
be able to think and have the abiliity to write it down
and get it in...fast...please call after 10 a.m. M-F,
520-8788.
A special thanks to Jaques and Lori lee Darden,
of Lights of Texas, for the extra help on the Talking
Heads show. Seems there was an error in the place-
ment of the stage and the main powerline ended up
being about 15 feet too short. Jaques left the gig he
was working on to help out. That's special.
Ric Tangle & The Squares have added guitarist,
vocalist David Pennick to the band. • Dave's credits
include schooling at HSPVA and groups like Barrage,
The Voices, and The G. Gordon Liddy Senior High
School Stage Band. The latter you have seen at your
favorite shopping mall (without the consent of the
mall). — David still plans to hang with the G. Gordon
Liddy bit but knows The Squares is a career-oriented
move.
Cardi’s was wall to wall people before the
Michael Stanley Band hit the stage Oct. 18—Sporadic
chants of Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, MSB,
Photographers: Need photo-illustrations of the
culture...not just performance photos of bands. If you
can help, call 520-8788

Many business people in town know about Style
Appeal—a group of ladies in every size and shape that
go to area clubs and put on fashion shows—clubs like
Todd's, Bentley's, Farrari's, Remington's, Penrod’s,
Dillon’s and on and on and on. You can actually buy
the clothes there. Pretty stuff from the lines of
Niteworks, Shirley of Hollywood, Funky Fashions, and
Climax. Cindy Coyle, one of the owners, has told me
of a hot new concept called Phasa—a full fashion
production incorporating acting, voice and dance using
some very talented area people. Not just your run of
the mill fashion show—skits, songs, dance—the whole
spif. And instead of several lines to choose from only
one line of clothes exhibited—for a broader view of
that line. Again, as in Style Appeal, you buy it there.
No waiting or forgetting. The group consists of Sharon
Kempner, Lasay Smith, Vicky Johnson, Cathy
Hortman, Candi Lingerfetter, Susan Hayes and Cindy
Coyle. Basing it on Cindy's credits alone it should be
good. As an actress Cindy Coyle is probably best
known portraying Laura in Tom Eyen's Neon Woman at
the Equinox. She's also worked with Scott Holsman in
The Rocky Horror Picture Show and her latest
achievement was "A Flea in her Ear" at the Chocolate
Bayou Theatre. For a great afternoon lunch or drink
catch Phasa—at finer clubs near you.
Dirty's, 1701 Durham right off I-10, now has an
upper open deck on top of the original restaurant. It
does have a roof, clean bathroom, and room for lots of
outdoor fun—including the adorable friendlystaff--. A
new Dirty's has just been opened at the corner of
Richmond and Chimney Rock. Both clubs are very
casual and reasonably priced. Menu offers burgers and
grilled steaks while the house specialty seems to be
chicken fried steak. Good tasty nachos. If you enjoy
dining and drinking in a friendly, comfortable atmos-
phere—either Dirty's is a good choice.
During the 1983-83 season, five Houston theatres
(Alley Theatre, Chocolate Bayou, the Ensemble, Main
Street Theatre and Stages) are showcasing the work of
contemporary women playwrights by staging plays that
have been winners or finalists for the Susan Smith
Blackburn prize during its first year—Robert—I hope
you read this—I am not an anti-feminist.
The Nineth Annual Texas Renaissance Festival is
still cooking but Nov. 6 is the last day—so make your
plans or miss out till next year. Call 713-356-3002 for
info.
ON THE STREETS would like information on
things happening in Houston. If you feel you have
something of interest—send a typed copy of what's
happening to Public News, c/o BIL HIL - ON THE . .
STREETS or call 520-8788 if you waited too long and
spudded out. Please give us as much notice as
possible.
Have a safe Halloween.

MSB emerged from a mainly unfamiliar crowd. A
sense of the midwest supporting an act they had been
weaned on.
A power failure on the first song "Gotta Keep
Workin" plagued the club and band for about 10
minutes. Convenient timing. There were new songs
Highlife" and "How Can We Call This Love" as well as
favorites "Spanish Nights" and "He Can't Love You
Like I Love You". The band was super tight and had a
good road crew. Four stars to those midwesternites.
The Zealot's 12 inch 45 single is doing quite well.
Rat Records, Reel Records, Infinite Records, and all
Houston Mr. Music locations are carrying the disk.
KEDY in Lufkin has added both "Pickup The Pieces",
"Adventures in the Night" to rotation. Oct 28—The
Zealots at The Plunge.
Six Gun, hillbilly rock *n rollers opened for Eric
Johnson a few nights ago at Rockefeller's. This 4
piece act could have easily passed as one of those
bands you saw on your favorite "B" surf flick. Though
there was certainly enough musical talent and picture
quality image, the act did have weaknesses that unless
overcome could keep them from becoming a class act.
Onstage utilization of the four members was not used
efficiently—as in stageshow—Cm guys— you dress
o.k., your hair looks great, you play o.k.—but you got a
move—get into it. Flash etc., etc., etc. Also con-
tinuity was a factor. A smoother show keeps the
crowd reacting—if you let go for a second too long—
you may lose somebody. Keep the audience happy—
they will want more—you'll play more.
It's not down on the band time—but I truly want
to see acts succeed and do good. Many of my friends
play in Area bands and I want them to do great-but—
from a strictly professional standpoint, Detonator Oct.
17 was a dud. Each member of the band has true
musical quality—but as a band it just didn't mesh.
Though the band prides itself in having a sound that no
one else has—what good does that do when only one
couple dances the whole set? What good does that do
when an open-minded person says "I'm not impressed."
True, there were some courteous people there and two
or three good songs. Even those could be re-arranged.
/True, the sound drew from the band. Manuel's guitar
riff were muffled and lost at several points while
John's bass was, to say the least, distorted. No decent
mix on the drums. Vocals at times were tolerable but
muddy. But the band can't reply it was just the
soundman—true, but band needs to write and re-
arrange for a broader mass appeal.
On the lighter side, foosball seems to be a
release for several music business people in the area.
A good way to release some tension with a really
competitive game. Some of the regulars are:
Lance Eno (Wurx drummer) has a mean stare and
a respectable pull.
Brad Meyer (Kayote drummer) Mr. Confidence,
good back, decent front, reliable blocker
Dwayne Massey (Keyboardist Oz Knozz) Decent
back, has fun, chooses suited partners.
Rick Richards (Drummer Walkee Talkee) Good
form, good back pull.
Billy Lindquist (Custom instrument painter,
stage manager) Most improved player—up or back-
into it.
Me, Bil Hil - Clever, crafty, keen eye, aware
squirrel balls, skrew shots—great player
Seems like some of us are working on making
foosball America's 2nd most favorite indoor sport.
Jessica Chase has teamed with Gene Coleman
and friend in Dallas. Jessica is young and aggressive
with a super attitude towards the business as well as
many favorable credits. Do yourself a favor—catch
Jessica Chase Nov. 7 at Cardi's—An American Bands
Showcase.
