Weather—:—
Continued from Page 1
The mercury dropped to a
low of 19 degrees early Satur-
day, 23 degrees on Sunday and
Monday, and 28 degrees early
Tuesday. Southerly winds were
expected to bring warmer tem-
peratures by the end, of the
week, but freezing rain and
sleet began here late Tuesday
morning and were predicted
for all of east and north Texas
late Tuesday as the tempera-
ture hung around 32 degrees.
Wednesday’s forecast called
for sleet turning to rain west of
Upshur County with the tem-
perature rising into the 40s.
High winds Saturday and
Sunday put the chill factor
down into the lower teens as
winter’s worst blast held most
of Texas in its grip. Deep East
Texas and the Houston area
were hit hard as icy rain broke
thousands of tree limbs, sent
cars skidding, cut power to tens
of thousands of customers and
closed schools and businesses.
Schools in the Lufkin and Na-
cogdoches areas were closed
again Tuesday.
