Just this week the news was full of reports that
might boggle the rational mind - - albeit they could be
considered "little things”.
President Reagan in his exhuberance to meet
his campaign promises overlooked a mere $7 Billion
in expenditures. Of course he blamed the past ad-
ministration for the error. An internationally known
lay scientist apparently committed suicide because
the Federal government was about to drop support of
his turtle preservation program.
About the same time it was learned that since
, before the first of the year Houston police had not
taken any fingerprints at the scene of the crime
because they were out of (of all things) fingerprint
powder!
And out of Washington came cries of pain from
a bureaucrat in charge of some division of the
Energy Department. His problem. He just couldn’t
see how he was going to make it on his salary - - - his
sacrifice for government service may be too great,
according to him.
His salary? $150,000 per year!

Children act fast* so do poisons
March 15 -21 is National Poison
Prevention Week and a good time to
check for poor storage of poisons,
reports Michael Ellis, Director of the
Southeast Texas Poison Center *
During the 1980 the Poison Cen-
ter was contacted over 19,000 times
for a poisoning emergency and some
11,000 times for general information
about preventing poisoning. Accord-
ing to Ellis about 70 percent of all
those calls involved a child who is five
years old or younger This is the
prime age for small objects found
down low to go directly to the mouth.
Although the ingestion of foreign
substances occurs quite frequently in
a young child, Ellis reports that
luckily true “poisonings” do not occur
nearly as frequently.
. Parents' who have a child who
has swallowed a harmful or poisonous
substance are urged to call the Poison
Center first before rushing the child to
the hospital. Ellis says that about 85
percent of the time the patient can be
treated at home and does not require
medical attention.
The Poison Center in Houston
can be reached at 654-1701. It is
answered 24 hours a day, seven days a
week.
