AUTOMATIC GAS
WATER HEATER
The revolutionary, new Amana FPR (Freezer-
Plus-Refrigerator) occupies no more floor space
than a refrigerator alone. Yet it genuinely ful-
fills the functions of both a freezer and a refrig-
erator! The big, roomy automatic-defrost
refrigerator section holds as much food as a 12
cubic foot conventional refrigerator. And the
precision-engineered, full-scale freezer section
actually offers greater capacity than an 8 cubic
foot freezer ... holds 297 pounds of food! See it
today — for new convenience in your kitchen!

THAT LONESOME ROAD
FRANKLIN PIERCE (1853-1857) won the election of 1852 as a
“dark horse” candidate of the Democrats.
A Bowdoin graduate and lawyer, he won rapid political advance-
ment as a Jacksonian Democrat. During the Mexican War Pierce was
a brigadier general. Thereafter he continued to oppose antislavery
tendencies within his party.
As President, he followed a course of appeasing the South at
home and playing with ideas of territorial expansion abroad. The
Gadsden Purchase was made during his administration, but plans for
a transcontinental railroad fell through. He never supported coercion
of the South and his opposition to a Civil War made him disliked in
the North.
Pierce died in relative obscurity in Concord, New Hampshire, in
The reproduction of President Pierce above is from the famous
Pach photograph collection on loan from the Library of Congress for
the “Mr. President, Pictorial Parade of 33 Presidents” on exhibit at
the Museum of Fine,Arts at the State Fair of Texas, October 6-21.
Portraits, sculpture and prints of all the presidents and some of their
wives have been collected from throughout the nation for the State
Fair show.

Police Found Him
Sandman was found by Phoenix
once Monday. He professed com-
plete ignorance of his identity or
whereabouts since his clothes were
found strewn along Newport
Beach, R. I.
The family had received no
word from the wholesale drug
firm manager since the day he
had gone fishing. Mrs. Sandman
said the hardest thing was explain-
ing her husband’s absence to their
children.
“They watched for him. They
would look disappointed when the
door opened and daddy didn’t
come in. Thank God they’ll see
him again coming through that
door.”

LEADS SOMEWHERE?
Yes, it leads from Rio Vista through
a FORGOTTEN ranching and farm-
ing section of Johnson County. It
leads past Johnson County’s NEW
PARK at Old Klondike. It is an im-
portant road and serves thousands of
people.
The State Highway Commission will
build it if the Commissioner’s Court
of Johnson County will cooperate. So
far, they have refused . . . and also
are delaying the development of the
PARK.

Shows Up After
Death Reported
PAWTUCKET, R. I. (UP) —The
wife of a Pawtucket man missing
since Sept. 20 and presumed dead
by authorities, hailed a modern
’miracle” today as she flew to
Arizona to rejoin her husband.
Mrs. Rosalyne Sandman, 30, and
the family physician, Dr. Samuel
H. Boyer of Boston, left by plane
less than three hours after learn-
ing that Edward Frank Sandman,
35, had been found suffering from
amnesia in Phoenix, Ariz.
Mrs. Sandman told the United
Press that when she heard her
husband’s voice by long distance
telephone, “we really knew that
God had performed a miracle.”
She Never Gave Up
“We never believed that Ed was
dead, but the police didn’t give
us much hope. When they found
his clothes on the beach, they were
sure he was dead. But I never
believed it.”
When Mrs. Sandman first learn-
ed from a Glendale chiropractor
that her husband was alive and
well, she screamed the words “Ed
is fine” to her family and prompt-
ly fainted.
The 30-year-old mother of three
quickly regained her composure
with the aid of her sister, Mrs.
Stanley Richards, and asked to
talk with hor husband by phone.
When she had finished, each of
the Sandman’s three children,
Donna, 8, Gill, 7%2, and Richard,

Unions Are Facing
Corruption Charges
WASHINGTON (UP) — The
AFL-CIO today began a series of
closed-door hearings on corrup-
tion charges against three small
national unions.
The cases are the first under-
taken by the etical practices
committee set up by the AFL-CIO
under its pledge to rid organized
labor of corrupt influences.
The first hearing involves the
15,000 member Distillery Workers
Union of Union City, N. J.
The committee Wednesday will
hear the case involving the 73,000-
member Allied Industrial Workers
Union of Beverly Hills, Calif. The
representatives of 72,000-member
Laundry Workers Union of Indi-
anapolis, Ind. — not to be con-
fused with the Amalgamated
Workers Union — will go before
the committee Thursday.
The charges against all three
unions involve alleged welfare
fund abuses. The charges are
based almost entirely on evidence
produced by a Senate subcom-
mittee headed by Sen. Paul H.
Douglas (D-Ill.) that investigated
union welfare funds in 1954 and
1955. .
