INDIAN WARS
A Biographical Encyclopedia
of the Mountain Men, Soldiers,
Cowboys, and Pioneers
Who Took Up Arms During
America's Westward Expansion
By BILL O'NEAL
T he United States' westward expansion dur-
ing the nineteenth century led to an inevit-
able clash between white and Indian cultures.
In the fighting that followed, many brave men
and women on both sides endured great hard-
ship, lost homes and property, mourned loved
ones, and sacrificed their lives.
Of those white men involved in the conflict,
a few names spring instantly to mind-George
Armstrong Custer, Phil Sheridan, Jim Bridger,
William F. Cody, George Crook, Ranald Mac-
kenzie, William Fetterman, and Nelson Miles.
Others less well known fought with courage and
distinction. Some were treacherous and blood-
thirsty. Countless more remain nameless and
are lost to history.
Fighting Men of the Indian Wars is a compen-
dium of America's Indian Wars and the moun-
tain men, soldiers, cowboys, and pioneers who
took part in them. In addition to an exhaustive
list of all the major battles and many minor
skirmishes and incidents, the extensive in-
troductory essay treats topics ranging from
cowboys as Indian fighters to extraordinary
exploits of the warriors as well as the white
men. It also explains the combat techniques
employed by both sides. A section on the Con-
gressional Medal of Honor lists every Indian
Wars recipient of that award, organized in
chronological order by battle fought. It further
analyzes in depth the number of Medals of
Honor awarded by unit, rank, and state.
