•In Dallas, surveys show a consistent figure of about 30 percent of
riders diverted from automobiles to the DART light-rail system.
Another concern that supports the idea of light-rail is the rise of
population. The predicitions made by Capitol Metro’s New Starts to
the Federal Transit Administration for funding estimates that by 2025,
the regional population will exceed 1.9 million, with the fastest grow-
ing part of the Austin region being the suburban areas north of the
current urban core. Imagine what this will mean to St. Edward’s?

a reduction in the amount of pollution in the air. Pollution itself is a
combination of many different gasses, but automobiles make up just
one part of the pie. The light-rail might be able to reduce pollution,
but this does not obliterate the huge dilemma of air pollution as a
whole.
If you love Austin the way it is right now, then you should vote ‘no’
on the light-rail proposal. Remember the-construction on Congress,
and how congested and ugly it got during those endless months?
Remember the feeling of how you thought you could never get to H-

Once they get on the rail, it’ll be a straight shot to their point of
destination.
But what about the argument that only those who are currently riding
the bus system will be the ones who will ride the rail? Almost every
study and survey provides data showing buses and trains attract
different sets of riders. Bus passengers tend to be from low to middle
income groups. In a phenomenon called “rail bias,” light rail riders
tend to be more representative of the middle and upper-middle class
who were previously dependent on their cars.

rewarding, you’ll wonder
•To this end, light-rail has proven to have a very positive effect in
the control of the future rate of traffic and pollution growth. In
Houston, where they have no light-rail, the average motorist con-
sumes 565 gallons of gasoline annually. Yet in cities with light-
rail, drivers use an average of 435 gallons annually: That’s 130
gallons in Houston’s drivers’ consumption.. Assuming a popula-
tion of 2 million, the result is a savings of 260 million gallons of
gasoline, $350 million worth of gasoline, and thousands of tons of
auto-emissions every year. This doesn’t even consider the savings
due to less car repair, tires, accidents, insurance, etc. Using just
the fuel savings costs alone, Dallas could have justified their in-
vestment in DART in just three years of operation!
According to Wendell Cox from the Austin Review, despite claims
to the contrary, light rail is less safe than buses and autos, and more
energy consumming. Commuting by rail is generally slower than
express bus or auto.
