hen made aware that God's Son had come, John the
Baptist reacted with humility. "This joy of mine is fulfilled," he
announced to his followers. "He must increase, but I must
decrease." (John 3:29-30)
Reflecting on my first year at LeTourneau University leaves
me with similar pause. I have experienced the extraordinary love of our Savior
at every turn of this busy year. He has blessed this university in a multitude of
ways, and my only response can be to honor Him with my praises.
I praise Him for equipping our leadership with a unity of purpose. In my first
month, I interviewed nearly two dozen university leaders and found them all in
agreement that LETU is a community striving to put Jesus Christ at the cen-
ter of all we do. Our focus on Christ is sincere and our efforts intentional. It is
neither a marketing campaign nor merely a tradition. We believe that the Lord-
ship of Christ extends to higher education-training the intellect while ignoring
the spiritual is not true higher education. Our unique mission is to educate the
whole person.
I exalt Him for blessing our graduates. I traveled from New Jersey to Los An-
geles in my first year. I was encouraged at every stop by the LETU alumni I met.
They are accomplished professionals who love their families and serve their
churches. The "LETU Nation" is salt and light in a world that needs both.
I extol the character of a God that meets our every need. This year I have
seen Him heal the sick among our faculty and staff. I have seen Him bring
wisdom as we wrestled with important decisions. He has sent friends to come
alongside this university and help us meet our financial needs. This fall, he has
given us the largest enrollment ever on our Longview campus. He has provided
the opportunity to build a new airport campus and a new dining hall. All we have
needed, God has provided.
On a personal note, I praise Him for giving me sufficient grace to meet each
day. He has given me good health, allowed me to enjoy the love of Marsha and
my two daughters, and blessed me with fulfilling work. I received a letter this
first year that continues to encourage me. "If the job seems too big for you," the
letter's writer promised, "then God has you where He can use you."
Jesus must increase. I must decrease. What other conclusion could I reach
after witnessing His holy work this past year? What better purpose could we
have? U
