OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
May 22, 1958
Dear Edsmen,
A

The past school year has been one of growth for St. Edward’s University,

that he spent a year at St. Edward’s, away back. He said that it was the most
important year in his education, because it decided the pattern of his whole
life.’’ '
At the annual business meeting, it was decided to change the name of the
Association. The purpose of this change is to emphasize the bond of filial
affection that forever unites the former students of St. Edward’s with their
Alma Mater, rather than emphasize the fact that their student days on the
Hilltop have ended. The St. Edward’s University Alumni Association embraces in
its membership all those who have been enrolled in school for one or more semesters.
For regardless of whether your student days at St. Edward’s numbered a few
months or four years, we trust that you have imbibed the true Spirit of St.
Edward’s --- the spirit of an educated Christian gentleman. -

We began the year with a larger and stronger faculty than ever before.
Several new administrative positions such as the Placement Office, the Director
of Testing and Guidance, the Director of Development, and the Director of
Physical Plant were set up. Construction on the new Andre Residence Hall was
begun during the summer and completed a few months ago. The new Science Building
is rapidly nearing completion now, and the entire road system is being revamped.
Our new Diocesan Newspaper, THE LONE STAR CATHOLIC, was begun by Mr. Dale Francis.
The Latin-American Program was begun under the direction of Father McDowell,
C.S.C. The Board of Lay Advisors became the new Board of Lay Trustees.

Brother Raymond Fleck
Yes, my dear Edsmen, the Spirit of St. Edward’s is in you; it is part of
you. It is a Spirit that is sorely needed in these days of tension and unrest.
So, let the Spirit of St. Edward’s be shown in your life, and when the opportunity
arises, come back to the Hilltop to renew it.
The Ex-Students Association has not been unaffected by the spirit of growth
at St. Edward’s. Soon after the dues notices were sent out, it became evident
that the number of dues-paying members would far exceed the number for any
preceding year. When it came time for the annual reunion, all of us on campus
were pleased to see the large number of alumni who returned to their Alma Mater
to renew old friendships and to see, first-hand, the changes that are taking
place on the Hilltop.
