The St. Edward’s University Board
of Trustees has elected five new
members this spring. They are all
Austin-area residents who have been
involved with St. Edward’s in some
capacity in the past; Dr. Isabella Cunn-
ingham, William Renfro, Dr. Bob
Zapalac, M.D., Will Davis and Pike
Powers.

Director of the South Texas Chamber

State Chamber of Commerce and the
Southwest Texas Public Broadcasting

His professional associations include
the American Association of Petroleum
Landmen, the American Institute of
Banking, the American Petroleum In-
stitute and the Independent Petroleum
Association of America.
In the past year Mr. Renfro has
taken a major role in assisting St. Ed-
ward’s with its tax exempt bond issue.

Will Davis is an attorney at law and a
partner in the firm of Heath, Davis and
McCalla. From 1954 to 1957 he served
as Attorney General of Texas and later
as General Counsel to the Texas State
Board of Insurance. He received his
education at both Lamar University and
Baylor University, and is a member of
the American, Texas, and Travis Coun-
ty Bar Associations, licensed to prac-
tice law before the Supreme Court.
Mr. Davis is a member of numerous
professional and community organiza-
tions. In recent years he was a
member of the governor’s Select Com-
mittee on Public Education and the
Texas State Board of Education.
Here is a copy of the original minutes of the very first trustee’s meeting in 1885. It’s been
jokingly rumored that there may never again be a meeting of such brevity!
Dr. Isabella Cunningham is Chair of
the Department of Advertising at the
University of Texas at Austin, and is
also the Ernest A. Sharpe Centennial
Professor of Communication. She
began her work with UT in 1971. Prior
to that, Dr. Cunningham taught at Sao
Paulo, Brazil and at Michigan State
University in East Lansing.
She is a member of various associa-
tions including the American Academy
of Advertising, the American Marketing
Association and the American Advertis-
ing Federation. She has devoted much
of her time to community service
groups such as Women in Communica-
tion, The Austin Diocese Committee
for Communication and the Austin
Women’s Center.
Dr. Cunningham has published
several books and dozens of articles,
and has received many grants and
research awards, making numerous
presentations to national organizations
and community groups. She was a
member of the St. Edward’s MBA
faculty for ten years and prepared a
marketing study for St. Edward’s in
1981.

Mr. Davis has been devoting his ser-
vices to the St. Edward’s Centennial
Celebration, chairing the Futures
Dialogue.
Dr. Bob Zapalac, M.D., is a St. Ed-
ward’s alumnus from the class of 1962.
He has been a general supporter of the
university for many years, having
helped establish the Brother Daniel
Lynch Endowed Scholarship. While a
student at St. Ed’s, Dr. Zapalac was
president of the freshman class and
President of the St. Edward’s
Academy of Science.
Today Dr. Zapalac is in private prac-
tice at the Austin Neuro-Psychiatric
Clinic. He is Vice-Chair of the Mental
Health Avisory Committee of Texas,
Department of Mental Health and Men-
tal Retardation. He is a member of the
AMA, the American Psychiatric
Association, The Texas Medical
Association and the Texas Psychiatry
Society.
He received his medical degree from
the University of Texas Medical
Branch at Galveston, where he also
had his internship and residency. He
has published works dealing with
physiology, psychology and general
medicine.
A partner in the firm of Fulbright and
Jaworski, Pike Powers is currently
serving as Chairman of the Honorary
Steering Committee for the Centennial
He served in the Texas House of
Representatives from 1972 to 1979.
Recently Mr. Powers was named “Ex-
ecutive of the Year” by Austin
Business Executive magazine.
Mr. Powers belongs to several area
community groups, including Metro
2000, The Austin Group, Quality
Austin and the Austin Area Research
Organization. He is also a member of
the board of directors of the Rubicon
Group and Fellows of the Young
Lawyers.
He has several roles in the State Bar
of Texas and the American Bar
Association and is president of the
Austin Democratic Forum.
