from the Meadows Foundation in Dallas. Sorin Hall is cur-
rently used for learning laboratories, faculty offices and stor-
age. After the renovation Sorin will feature a more efficient
floor layout and will house about 25 faculty offices, a word
processing lab, a writing lab, a seminar room and a confer-
ence room.
President Patricia Hayes is enthusiastic about the new
project, the second such historic renovation since she came to
St. Edward’s in 1984 (the Main Building was totally restored
in 1986). “The Sorin restoration is a critical part of our cam-
pus master plan,” says Hayes. “It provides much needed
office and academic support space and directly enhances our
service to students. I am particularly pleased with the founda-
tion support we received for this project,” Hayes continues.
“Both the national recognition of the
Pew Charitable Trusts and the support in
Texas from the Meadows Foundation are
encouraging affirmation of what we are
doing at St. Edward’s.”
The faculty offices and laboratories
currently in Sorin Hall will begin a
relocation process this spring and actual
construction on the renovation will begin
by early this summer, according to Dick
Kinsey, assistant to the president. “Our
goal is to have the building back in use
by the summer of 1989.”
The 6,500 square foot renovation
will include the restoration of the
exterior brick and wood facade of the
building and the addition of new heating,
air conditioning, electrical and mechani-
cal systems. It will also include major
structural reconstruction and repair and a
new interior layout and finish-out.
The Pew Charitable Trusts consist
of seven individual charitable funds
established between 1948 and 1979 by
the sons and daughters of Joseph N.
Pew, founder of the Sun Oil Company.
The Trusts support nonprofit organiza-
tions dedicated to improving the quality
of life for individuals and communities
and encouraging personal growth and
self-sufficiency.
The Meadows Foundation was
created in 1948 by Algur H. Meadows
and his wife Virginia, to benefit the
people of Texas. Bom in a small town in
Georgia, Al Meadows built General
American Oil Company of Texas into
one of the nation’s most successful
independent oil and gas production
companies. This success enabled him to
accumulate significant wealth that, for
over fifty years, he has generously
shared with others though his philan-
thropy. Today, the Meadows Foundation
gives to programs throughout Texas in
health, education, social services, the
civic and cultural sector, and the arts.
Architects for the project are
Graeber, Simmons & Cowan, of 212
East Seventh in Austin, who also were
the architects for the dramatic restora-
tion of the Main Building. According to
St. Edward’s President Patricia Hayes,
“The Sorin renovation will take St.
Edward’s one step further in the
restoration of our historic buildings. As
with the renovation of the Main Build-
ing, the Sorin restoration will both
preserve historic buildings and greatly
increase their functional value.”
Built in 1913, the historic building
originally served as a convent for 12
French Sisters of St. Mary of the
Presentation who provided cooking,
laundering and infirmary services for the
university until 1938. The Convent was
planned by Austin builder Charles Shurr
and called for “...a two-story structure
with a cellar and its own heating plant.”
It was to have twelve small private
rooms on the second floor with toilet
facilities on the east end. Plans also
called for a chapel and other facilities
downstairs including an infirmary at the
east end. On the Feast of Assumption in
mid-August, 1913 the cornerstone was
laid on the northeast comer of the
building with the inscription, “Presenta-
tion Convent August 15, A.D. 1913,”
(which can still be seen.)
Sorin Hall is named after Reveend
Edward Sorin, C.S.C., the former
Superior General of the Holy Cross
