A Word From the Executive Director
Organizations in both the private and public
sectors are experiencing escalating demands
for information. When I talk to my colleagues
in nursing practice, education and professional
organizations, this phenomenon seemsuniver-
sal! As some of you who have tried to call the
Board office know, itis becoming more difficult
for our staff to respond to the numerous calls.
This problem is due to many factors including
confusion over the appropriate source of the
Kathy -homas, MN, RN needed information, increasing awareness of
the information which the Board can supply,
and external forces suchas employment opportunities which require creden-
Sals verification.
The Eoard is committed to disseminating information to our constituents.
The increase in circulation of RN UPDATE to a quarterly publication and the
offering of workshops throughout the state to educate nurses about their
responsibilities under licensure have certainly raised awareness of Board
rules, position statements and changes to the laws affecting nursing practice.
In 1995: the Board opened it's BNE Bulletin Board (BNE-BBS) making the
NPA, Board Rules, Position Statements and other publications available to
those who have access to computers with modems.
By the end of 1996, the Board expects to have a WEB site to further make
information available :hrough the Internet. It is hoped that by making
information more accessible, nurses will be able to get the information they
need from the Board in a timely manner.
The Board receives approximately 16,000 telephone inquiries/month. Al-
thloughvoice mailmessaging,24hour licensure verification by our electronic
system. and standard informational messages have been implemented, the
number of phone calls continues to increase. The agency is committed to
responding to ourcons-ituents and strives for excellence inservice;however,
all too often the volume exceeds our resources. Here are some suggestions
for accessing information more easily:
use the electronic VIPS system to verify licenses (512/305-7400-nights
and weekends are less busy);
* allow sufficient time for processing applications (time taken to respond
to an inquiry as to the status of an application takes away from applica-
tion processing time);
{ read the Nursing Practice Act, Board Rules and Regulations, Position
Statements and RN UPDATE and use these documents to evaluate your
situation before caIng with a practice question many times you can
answer your own question in this way;
* use the telephone numbers listed on page 19 to route your call to the
appropriate department;
X if you reach the voice mail of one of the staff, allow sufficient time for that
staff member to return your call;
use the BBS, 512/305-6864, to view or download copies of Board publi-
cations.
Your cuestions and informational needs do matter to us. As we attempt to
respond to the increasing demands for information, we appreciate your
patience and assistance. As always,the board strives for excellence in service.BOARD MEMBERS
