Mr. and Mrs. Beatte are at home

SAILOR IN KINGSVILLE
Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Scott and
family and Miss Juanita and John
Henry Snowden all of Elgin enjoyed
the week-end in Kingsville as guests
of Abner Cleveland Scott, who vol-
unteered for training in the United
States Navy. He enlisted for ser-
vice Sept. 5, 1942. Abner has been
stationed at Kingsville for about 2
weeks and expects to be transferred
from Kingsville sometime soon. He
says he likes the navy fine and it is
a grand place for all boys.

BEAUTIFICATION OF CAMP
SWIFT AREA AS PROJECT
The Bastrop County Federation
of Clubs convened in Bastrop Satur-
day, October 10th, at 2:30 p. m., at
the Methodist Church, with Mrs.
Paul Farris, of Elgin, the new pres-
ident, in the chair.
As the project for the year, Mrs.
Farris introduced a tentative pro-
gram for the landscaping of a num-

as guests over the week-end Mr. and
Mrs. E. O. Berry of Temple, Mrs.
E. A. Berry and baby, Shreveport,

COURSE IN TELEGRAPHY
REPORT FOR RELIEF DUTY
Edmond (Buster) Nachlinger and
Jack Abrahamson, popular young
Elginites have recently completed
the prescribed course of study in
telegraphy and are now both at work
as relief operators, Nachlinger at
Palmer, Ellis county, Texas, and
Abrahamson at Waller, Waller coun-
ty, Texas.
These young men prepared them-
selves for a useful career in an im-
portant field and their many friends
wish them each rapid promotion
and happiness in their chosen
vocation.
MISS DANKLEF’S. ENGAGEMENT
ANNOUNCED BY PARENTS
Of cordial interest to a large cir-
cle of friends in Elgin and Austin
is the announcement by Mr. and
Mrs. E. H. Danklefs, of the engage-
ment and approaching marriage of
their daughter, Elsa Lucille, to
William Rogers Whitmore, of Ran-
dolph field, son of Mrs. Harry Vogt,
St. Louis, Missouri.
Miss Danklefs is a graduate of
El Hi and of University of Texas,
receiving her B. A. degree in June,
1942. She was prominently identi-
fied on the campus being a member
of Sigma Delta Pi, honorary Spanish
organization; Phi Lambda Theta,
honorary education organization;
Blue Stockings, honorary English
, organization; and Cap and Gown.
She has been in San Antonio since
. graduation, where she is an em-
ployee of the Federal Government.
, Mr. Whitmore attended University
of Texas and received his degree in
Journalism in August, 1942, where
, he was a member of Sigma Delta
Chi, honorary journalism association,
was Sports Editor of the Daily Tex-

Roy Caffey of Siloam has been
laid up for a while with a large ris-
ing on his knee. Dr. W. E. Camp-

and Mr. M. W. Ebright, of the Elgin
meets in the near future in Austin.

The WMU of First Baptist Church
met Tuesday afternoon for Bible
Study with Mrs. Paul Jacobsen as
leader.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Webb left
Monday morning for a visit with
Mrs. Webb’s parents at Joliet, Illi-
nois and Indianapolis, Indiana, to
spend a 14-day furlough Mr. Webb
was fortunate to receive.

the former Elizabeth Keele, of

end were Lt. Saul Diamond of Camp
Hood and Mollie and Julius Sandgar-

Mrs. S. G. May has returned home
following a six weeks visit in the
home of her brother in Loraine, Tex
Mrs. Floyd Wangerin of Sheboy-
gan, Wisconsin, is here for a visit
with her husband, Pvt. Wangerin.

BITTINGS SCHOOL OPENS
The Sittings School opened its
42-43 term Sept. 28th, with Miss
Adell Hennig as teacher.
The Parent-Teacher association
held its first meeting Thursday ev-
ening. , Oct. 8th, with Mrs. Robert
Hibbs, president, and Mrs. D. C.
Bennett, secretary, in charge.
There will be a chicken supper

VICTORY CLUB MEETS
The Victory Club, that consists
of the ninth grade of the Coupland
High School was called to order
October 9, 1942. The minutes were
read and corrected. The reporter
and the error spy then gave their
reports. The program chairman
took charge and presented to the
club an enjoyable program.
After the program new business
was discussed. The program chair-
man, Neils Nelson, appointed Ruth
Boundy and Esther Toman to help
get entertainment. Olivert Finde-
sen, error spy, appointed Eleen Stiba
and Edmond Haverland to help re-
port errors.
The club has decided to work in
a “Junior Texas Rangers Organizat-
ion”. Wilbert Gustafson, secretary,
has sent for further information a-
bout the organization. This organi-
zation will be to help in the defense
scrap drive. The club members will
receive badges for this work. The
president, Evelyn Kreidel, set Oct-
ober 30 for our next meeting. - The
meeting was adjorned.
