John M. Lane, Waco is visit-
ing friends and relatives in Elgin
a few days this week.
Mr. and Mrs. Porter Stoval and
son, Paul Glenn, of Houston, and
Mr. and Mrs. Clide Nalls and
daughter, Shirley and Diane, of
Austin, spent the week-end in the
Mr. and Mrs. Ned Owens were
week-end visitors in Bertram,
guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Heus-
seur.
Mrs. Lillian Connor and brother
Bill Ward left early this morning
for Houston to accompany their
father, Gene Ward, home after a
six weeks stay in Memorial Hospi-
tal, that city, following a major
operation. Mr. Ward is able to be
up and about and recuperating
nicely, but will not resume any
business activities for a while yet.
His many friends are glad to wel-
come him home and wish him a
speedy’return to his former state
of good health.
Miss Evelyn Houston, of Ft.
Sam Houston, San Antonio, was
a week-end visitor with her moth-
er, Mrs. E. J. Rohde, and Mr.
Rohde.

recently sold their home (the C.

Stephens of Austin and moved
late last week to their cottage on
North Main, vacated by Mrs. A. C.
Balhorn. Mr. Stephens came over
Monday and is busy seeing after
some re-finishing in the house and
when this is completed he and
Mrs. Stephens will move to Elgin
to make their home. Mrs. Bal-
horn has gone to Hearne, where

children have moved into their
new home, the former Joe Sand-
garten homestead, which they pur-
chased several weeks ago.

and Skipper spent Sunday and
Monday at Marshall Ford, guest
of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Foehner
and family.
T. R. Melton, Austin, was a
business visitor in Elgin Tuesday.

turned to Corpus Christi, where
she reported Monday, Septem-
ber 2nd for duty as a member of
the Public School faculty.
Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Taylor of
Wichita Falls visited their nephew
and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Camp-
bell, of Prewitt, Sunday and Mon-
day of last week, returning home
on Tuesday.
Petite little Ann West and
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland
West of Austin were guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Jesse West Labor

Miss. Elizabeth Ware, Houston,
spent the week-end and holiday

and Mrs. Richard Green.
Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Harkins
and baby will make their home in
Elgin, living in their own new
home, located near Mrs. Har-
kins’ mother, Mrs. Ollie Carter,
on Houston highway, as soon as it
is completed. They have been
living in Bastrop. Work on the
new home started early last week.
Mr. Harkins is a veteran of World
War II.

Will D. Nichols left Tuesday for
Galveston to attend the 28th an-
nual state American legion meet-
ing, as delegate from the local
Henry A. Lundgren Post 295.
“Bill” is also there as a member
of the famous Austin Drum and
Bugle Corps, the oldest organiza-
tion of its kind in the state —and
plenty good too. They are hoping
to win first prize in a contest,
which will be an all-expense paid
trip to the American Legion Na-
tional Convention which will con-
vene in San Francisco, Calif in
October.

Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Ebarb and
family of Rosenberg spent from
Sunday until yesterday here in
the home of his mother, Mrs. Ma-
bel Ebarb.
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Davis and
family returned to their home in
Corpus Christi Saturday following
a visit here with relatives and
friends. They were accompanied
back by Miss Hattie Beth Schil-
ler of Elgin who will teach in the
Elizabeth School (a 22-teacher
school) in Corpus, again for her
third year. School opened there
Tuesday.
Billy Tom Houston, son of Mrs
E. J. Rohde, who was discharged
from the US Coast Guard in
March, went to Wichita, Kansas
after a 3-weeks visit here with
homefolk, and has been employ-
ed there since that time. He has
enrolled in the university at Wich-
ita and being interested in sports,
hopes to play some football there
this season.

graduate work at TCU, Ft. Worth.
