At the Friday Night Social,
Jeb Crowell had the audience in
stitches — doing a take-of on the
blustering character who belittles
everybody and everything that isn’t
from his own home town.
Well, we can laugh at that sort
of character because from where
I sit, Americans are just the op-
posite. We like to boast a bit per-
haps, about the paint job on the
new barn, or the missus’ style of
cooking—but we aren’t intolerant
of people who don’t think or act
exactly the same way we do.

In our town, for instance: Some
folks like band concerts, others
don’t — some families serve beer
with dinner, others, buttermilk —
and as for politics, there’s plenty of
healthy disagreement.
But when it comes to denying
folks the right to think or act as
they choose ... no, we’re like you
—we don’t believe in it, whether it
goes for serving beer, or speaking
one’s mind on public affairs.

Katy Committee
Meeting Held May 3
In La Grange
A meeting of the Committee-
men from various towns along
the line on the Katy railroad be-
tween Waco and Houston met at
the Court House in La Grange at
2:00 p. m. Monday, May 3rd, for
the purpose of considering the
contract of agreement that was
signed with the Katy officials at
Waco April 23rd.
The agreement with the Katy
Railroad Company is to the effect
that they will continue the hear-,
ing that was set to be held at Bas-
trop on April 23rd before the
Texas Railroad Commission until
after January 1, 1949. The Katy
railroad claims to be losing con-
siderable money in the operation
of the two daily passenger trains
No.’s 11 and 24 and the Commit-
tee worked out plans so that each
town and city along the line
would encourage shippers to ship
freight and express wherever pos-
sible on the Katy and to encourage
more travel by passengers on
these trains, and if at the end of
the 8 months period which would
be January 1, 1949, the railroad
had not shown an increase in rev-
enue they would be at liberty to
continue the hearing before the
Commission and this Committee
would not oppose the discontin-
uance of these trains. If at any
time in this 8 months period the
revenue increased to substantial
figures then the Railroad Com-
pany would go into another six
months contract to keep the trains
operating to see if there was an
opportunity to increase their re-
venue.
It was agreed that the various
towns and cities along the line
would advertise through the news-
papers and ask the merchants and
shippers to request their whole-
sale houses to ship all freight on
the Katy that was possible, in or-
der to fulfill our part of this con-
tract and in order to increase the
revenue to keep these two bene-
ficial trains in operation.
It was voted to refund all money
left to the original donors which,
after all expenses were paid
would amount to one-half of the
amount contributed.
A committee will be appointed
in the very near future to make
trips over the line to sell the idea
to the merchants, shippers, Cham-
friends for cards and lovely, use-
ful gifts I received for my birth-
day and on Mother’s Day.

So, it seems that to have or
not to have the day-time Katy
passenger train service is laid in
the laps of the towns along the
line from Waco to Houston. If
Elgin WANTS these trains, citi-
zens best get busy and ship and
travel more by Katy and encour-
age farmers and truck growers to
ship by rail—for their revenue
from now until January 1, 1949
is the weight in the balance and
the towns must cooperate individ-

to it that a nice increase results.
