Congress Is in Session!
The Anny-McCarthy hearings have served at least one pur-
pose. They’ve informed the people that a Congress is in session
in Washington.
You’d hardly know that the solons are in the Capitol—so
far as legislative accomplishments is concerned.
Seldom has a Congress failed to act on so much so late in the
session. Housing, taxes—except excess profits, which had to
meet a deadline—health. Social Security, defense, all these and
more, still await action.
Even most of the appropriation bills haven’t been acted upon.
The Labor Department budget, for instance, is just going before
a Senate subcommittee.
Even so—the Congress has set July 31 as the target date for
adjournment -
It’s hot in Washington in the summer, but not because of any
feverish activity by the men whom we’ve elected to make our
laws.

Cuban Federation
Of Labor Acts to
Outlaw Commies
Havanna.—The Cuban Federation of
Labor (CTC) meeting in emergency
session here declared against Com-
munist or fellow-traveler member-
ship in the federation.
Under chairmanship of Eusebio
Mujal Barn lol, general secretary, the
board decided by unanimous vote
that:
1.—No Communists will be seated to
any convention of the CTC or its af-
filiated unions. Communists who are
at present holding office in local un-
ions, national industrial federations,
provincial federations, central labor
bodies, or any other sub-division of
the CTC, will be removed.
1—The Executive Board of the CTC
and its administrative committee will
immediately review the situation of
all members of the Communist Party
in 1551 or thereafter and those who
have demonstrated allegiance to Com-
munist principles during that period.
3.—Local unions that refuse to ex-
pel Communists will be separated
from their national industrial federa-
tions. The national industrial federa-
tions that refuse to expel local unions
guilty of sheltering Communists will
be separated from the CTC.
4.—A special commission will be set
forget about a new contract for a year
or two. Must say ths negotiations
were torrid this year. Now it seems
that most ot our people are pleased
and I notice we are getting in Iba now
members, also a number are paying
up their dues. We still have a couple
of plants where the employees are in
the minority. They, too, get the raise
which is the law.
We have a copy of “The Butcher
Workman” left in the office by form-
er Bakery Repre eutatlve Cecil Ham-
lin. It has an ax dele on the unsanitary
conditions that the Amalgamated
Meat Cutters claim they found while
trying to organise some plants in
Texas engaged in the poultry process-
ing business. Most happy to say these
establishments are not in Dallas.
I wish more people could know
what a big part the Food Handlers
Unions play in the sanitary and
health conditions in places where they
are employed, and have union agree-
ments. These contracts would not be
complete without a sanitary clause
and the employers cooperate whole-
heartedly for any program in this
time.
Visit one of our union bakeries some
time and you must agree that manage-
ment and labor in our craft certainly
cooperate in this.
