took lessons briefly - when he was 14 but
said he didn’t learn anything. Instead, he
continued to figure things out, learning,
for example that whole notes were solid
black, and half notes were open.
Most everything the piano player
learned was gained on a piano he has
played since the beginning - a centu-
ry-old Mathushek upright that originally
sat in the home of his grandparents.
His monthly performances are well re-
ceived by both staff and residents. One

By his own admission, Don Cannon will
sit at just about any piano he finds.
He’s been sitting at least once a month at
one sitting in the Elgin Nursing and Re-
habilitation Center for over 30 years. He
began volunteering to play for residents
when the center was located at its former
location on Highway 290, when his great-
aunt was a resident.
That was, he guesses, back in 1995. He’s
been playing ever since.
Cannon is essentially self-taught. He

cially graduated during a commencement
ceremony at Wildcat Stadium on Friday
night.
Elgin ISD Board of Trustees led grad-
uates out on to the field, while the Elgin
High School band played the tradition
processional music.
Isidoro Aburto Martinez gave the intro-
duction remarks.
The Elgin High School Honor Guard
presented the colors at midfield and se-
niors from the Elgin High School Choir
sang the national anthem. Trevor Gru-
etzner led the pledge of alligance, fol-
lowed by the Texas pledge led by Stephen
Freeman.
Daniela Villegas shared some words in
memoriam of classmate Ender Lopez,
after which a moment of silence was ob-
served.
Delaney Webb gave the invocation, fol-
lowed by welcome remarks from Elgin
High School Principal Ricard Reyes.
Addie Rankin gave the opening re-
marks.

Elgin Board of Trustees approved the se-
lection of vendors for several district proj-
ects during a regular meeting on May 21.
Selections were approved for the follow-
ing projects:
--Booker T. Washington Elementary
School electrical project: Falkenberg Con-
struction with a base bid of $391,422.35
with an owner contingency of $15,000.
—Elgin ISD Flex Campus roof replace-
ment: CS Advantage USAA with a base bid
of $1,447,000 with an owner contingency
of $30,000.
--Elgin ISD Track Renovations: Vi-
bra-Whirl Sports with a base bid of
$229,496 with an owner contingency of
$12,000.
--Elgin High School renovations: the
board approved the ranking of most highly
qualified firms for this job as follows: ASD
Consultants, DKC Construction Group,
Braun & Butler.
In other budgetary items, the board ap-
proved four purchases greater than $50,000
for the district, including:
--Airgas (ventilation, welding booths,
equipment) for Elgin High School CTE
welding project, approximate cost: $52,068.
—Special needs bus, approximate cost:
$100,000.
—E3 Alliance-RAISE Up Texas School
Transformation (total expenditure for
BTW, Elgin Elementary and Neidig Ele-
mentary schools, including yearly planning
and implementation): $517,005.
