May is a month of me-
morials to honor our
veterans and remember
a great baseball player—
Babe Ruth, who on May
25, 1935 hit his last home
run at Forbes Field in
Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
He inspired a genera-
tion of players to do the
“Babe Ruth Trot” even as
far away as Elgin, Texas.
As we ready ourselves
for the grand opening
of the Elgin Recreation
Center, it seems fitting
that we take a moment to
remember a place in time.
That place, at 361 North
Highway 95 filled a need
for many years as a com-
munity baseball field
then the high school field
and practice field.
When in 2015, the Elgin
City Council made the
decision to use it for the
emergency shelter and
recreation center, it was
not an easy decision.
Sentimental feelings for
bleachers and other mem-
orabilia are legitimate
and is the reason we cap-
ture history at the mu-
seum.
Just like smells of a
summer peach cobbler
bubbling in a kitchen, no
one can freeze a place in
an everchanging world—
but together, we can cap-
ture photos or artifacts
to remember the people,
their names and the joy
they brought to us. I was
not fortunate as some in
Elgin were, to grow up in
the bosom of baseball and
have been elated to gather
a few facts, photos and
figures from the museum
to celebrate the season.
The walls of the Elgin
Depot Museum include a
large framed memorial to
the Baseball Champions
of 1950. Each player’s
position and photo im-
mortalized for all time—
so as not to forget those
athletes who won the Re-
“The Ag department

Camp Swift barracks an-
gling from right field to
center field,” Jerry says.
During a game with
Smithville, a long, high
ball was carried over
the nearest barrack and
out of sight but when
the centerfielder, Harlan
Scott, caught it, the um-
pire allowed the home
run to count for the other
team due to an obstruc-
tion. I believe it must
have taken quite a bit of
restraint to keep the fans
and players from Elgin
from brawling but there
is no mention of that kind
of misbehavior.
“Glory Days, A His-
tory of Elgin Sports,
vol.3” (EHA archives) is
a three-inch notebook put
together for an athletic
exhibit at the museum a
few years ago. I find it to
be a useful tool for those
of us who are “short” on
knowledge about base-
ball.
Of interest (to me) is
a diagram of a baseball
diamond that includes
measurements from the
pitcher’s mound to the
home plate, right and
left-handed batter’s box,
along with outfield mark-
ings and foul lines.
The page on the Elgin
Athletic Company, Inc.,
says, “The Elgin town
teams first played their
games at the old fair
park off of Central Ave-
nue and later at the Elgin
Standard Brick Company
park located at the brick
company.”
Until the park was cre-
ated on Highway 95, the
town team played for
over 20 years on the field
at the brickyard provided
by Buddy Prewitt.
In the late 1940s a group

From the President’s

located in the museum.
The upcoming exhibit
on telecommunications
(opening June 2) will be
a summer “must see”!
Answer to April’s Quiz:
The Elgin Union Depot
was built in 1903. Elgin’s

tower came later after a
train wreck.
