the third most frequent cause
of home fires during 1978.
New Hampshire officials who
investigated more than 730
fires involving damages of
$3,000 each or more in 1978
found that nearly 15% of them
were caused by improper
installation, maintenance or
use of wood-burning stoves.
Before you buy and install
any wood-burning stove, check
local building and fire codes to
make sure you will be in
compliance with the law.
Shelton said it is also a good
idea to notify your insurance
company, in writing, of any
change in your heating system
so you are protected in case of
trouble.

The increased popularity of
wopd-burning stoves as a
source of winter heat has
brought increased concern
about fire safety.
Experts say the stoves
themselves generally are not
dangerous, but improper
installation and carelessnesss
are causing problems.
“Wood heaters require
much more human attention
and humans always have and
always will make mistakes!’
wrote Jay W. Shelton, author
of the books, “Wood Heat
Safety!’ published in1979.
"If you expect wood heating
to be as simple and safe as an
occasional adjustment of the
thermostat, then stick to
electricity, gas or oil!’
If you are willing to take a
few precautions, Shelton said,
"heating with wood probably
involves no more risk than do
many other accepted choices
and activities in life, such as
living in a region with poluted
air. .
Sales of wood-burning
stoves have soared along with
prices of conventional fuels.
From 1972 — the year before
the Arab oil embargo — to
1979, sales increased almost
tenfold.
There are no national figures
on the number of fires relating
to wood-burning stoves. But
the Insurance Information
Institute, a trade association,
says local statistics show the
problem is growing.
In Oregon, for example, the
institute said officials report
that wood-heating units were
