We just want to congratulate you on the
‘‘new look” you have given the Courier..
‘Tho it has been some 8 years since we
sold the paper and left Elgin, we still have
a warm place in our hearts for the fine
people you serve and the paper we, edited
for 49 years or more. The pictures of your
big press show a far cry from the old
Washington hand press and a shirt tail
full of type which we bought from S. J.
Isaacs when we cast our lot for better or
worse with the good people of Elgin and
with our feeble efforts joined them in their
work of building the town and community
which has grown into the prosperous lit-
tle city it is today.
With very best wishes.

Many weeks ago, one of our prominent
citizens called our attention to the fact
that Elgin would soon have a 75th Anni-
versary to observe. Combining our no-
tions of what we consider to be the obli-
gation of a newspaper with the impending
change-over of the Courier to a new type
of printing, we started to gather the ma-
terial contained in this issue. It most cer-
tainly was NOT our desire or intention to
change, the history of Elgin or to inflict
our notions of what it should be. It has
been called to our attention by another
prominent citizen that we are in error a-
bout this being the 75th Anniversary of
Elgin, according to her records. We sin-
cerely respect her views and the relia-
bility of her evidence. However, we are
also obliged, for obvious reasons, to re-
spect the records of the Texas State His-
torical Association which quotes in their
handbook of Texas on page 554, Volume 1,
that Elgin was officially recognized as
Elgin in the year 1882, seventy five years
ago. We have no doubt in our minds that
the community itself was founded, as
claimed, in 1871 in conjunction with the
building of the railroad through this area.
While we have no wish to alter history, we
do have a profound interest in the basic
history of Elgin and an even greater in-
terest in its future. Therefore, we ded-
icate this issue to a community with an
outstanding history of great people in the
hope that our heritage will inspire an even
greater growth and progress in the years
ahead. So, for some this will be the 75th
Anniversary and for others, the 86th and
for all - the year the rains came, 1957.
