and farm-hands, who are not amenable
to the society’s strange laws; were
/ gathered for divine worship. Across
tho center of the church extends
a narrow aisle. - with a platform
at each end, one being occupied by two
organs, at which old Mr Henrici and
Miss Rapp sat playing. On both sides
of the aisle high-backed benches exten-
ded to the rear. The men sat on one
side, and the women on the other, fac-
ing each other. It was a singular
gathering, reminding one of American
colonial days. Miss Rapp wore a cos-
tume which was start! ng for her age.
It consisted of a purple gown, a blue
neckerchief, with red. blue, and green
bonier, and a mazarine-blue silk-quilt-
ed Normandy bonnet. When the sing-
ing of the opening hymn, accompanied
by the organ-playing of our aged hero
and heroine, who have sacrificed love
and devotion to the cruel community
law of celibacv, had been concluded,
Mr. Henrici walked across the aisle to
the opposite platform and began the
sermon of the morning. He sat on his
chair dur ng its ent re delivery.
Miss Rapp is about 78 years of age.
When young she was a lovelv girl, refin-
ed, highly educated, and posessed of con-
siderable musical taleut. She and Ja-
cob Henrici fell desperately in love
w th each other, but of course could
not marry. They have for many years
lived in the same house—he in one
wing with several old male members of
the society, while Miss Rapp, w th her
women, reside in another wing. As
thev sat s de by side in church this
morning, the syipath t c chords of the
few persons present conversant w ih
this secret romance were awakened,

the rel gious services were participated

was only a punishment in mycise, and would not undertake to
treat me. He said I might try Cod liver oil if I
