Texas Power & Light Company
began a massive program back in
1968 to reduce its dependency on
natural gas and oil by using lignite coal
as a generating plant fuel The first
lignite-fueled generating unit began
operation in 1971 Today, there are eight
lignite units in operation and others are
under construction or being planned. In
1979, we used approximately 11 million
tons of lignite coal to produce electricity.
Had we used oil to generate the same
amount of electricity, it would have
required 1.066 million gallons that s
25 million barrels and that can make a
lot of gasoline We re working hard to do
our part to help ease the energy crisis.
