At Detroit I looked at the
weathered brick buildings with
a new eye...a new respect for their
solid, country-style stability.
I turned off the main road to
wind my w ay through hills and
dales to Bagwell. It must have
been years since I went to that
little community and it all seemed
so new.
The return journey proved to be
the best part of my evening.
Heading westward the sun was
a fat, limpid orange globe, sinking
into a pink, dusky horizon.
The trees were throwing au-
tumn kisses of goodby, leaves
tumbling before and after my car.
The ordinary creeks sparkled in
