To paraphrase Bob Seger's
song... "Just about the time I feel
like screaming, and finding me a
wall to punch right through, I look
up and I just can't believe it...it's
sunshine!".
Mother Nature took pity on me
and the rest of the folks who had
winter doldrums and gave us
enough of a taste of springtime to
get us over the hump and on into
the rest of winter.
Cross, grumpy, tense and cabin-
feverish, I woke up the other morn-
ing to feel a change in the weather
that wiped my slate of irritations
clean.
I was able to spend the day walk-
ing, weeding, trimming and gener-
ally making prepartions for spring
time. Most of them may not have
been really necessary, but any ex-
cuse for a stay outside was used.
From the sunny southern cor-
ners of walks and old buildings the
swollen, yellow- dipped buds of
daffodils appeared.
Old japonica bushes sprouted
delicate pink blossoms.
Overhead the sunshine poured
down onto winter-weary bones.
A drive around showed people
everywhere doing exactly the same
things I was.
Those who didn't do yard work
were sitting on their porch or patio.
Everywhere doors and windows
were opened to let in some fresh,
sun washed air.
Lines of laundry sprang up in
clean tent cities, even around
homes with clothes dryers.
A scrutiny of pastures revealed
cattle stretched out flat, soaking up
that delicious warmth.
Horses pranced and galloped,
tossing their heads in joy.
The sky was gorgeous, the only
clouds placed there for purely deco-
rative reasons.
Somewhere down deep in the
mud frogs and turtles stirred and
came up for a brief sojourn in the
sunshine.
In every gully and creek deli-
cate "crawdads" not over and inch
and a half long skittered around,
so just-hatched as to be almost
transparent.
Three days of this glorious
weather has armed me to accept
the biting cold they say is coming.
It came, as usual, just in the
nick of time, just before my cabin
fever beGhhe unbearable.
ItisnX“Blse spring, it is only
a harbour that the yearly miracle
of rebirth is, indeed, on it's way.
