It is recorded by Protestant historians

stipulated sums, to persons desirous of
perpetrating crime. This debasing prac-
tice did not continue in vogue very long,
for the people even of the dark ages, could
not endure it, but we presume, from our
experience with the Post, those who first
raised their voices against the revolting
practice of selling "indulgences," Martin
Luther and others, were confronted with
the specious argument that the crime for
which the “indulgences’’ were granted
could not be prohibited; that prohibition
was sumptuary; that it was a failure and
