Texas craft brew history didn’t
really get started until the early
90s when the laws were changed
to allow craft brewing in Austin.
The law allowed Steve Ander-

one of the first craft breweries
in the state of Texas. Currently,
there are 14 different breweries
in Austin that are represented
in the library’s collection.

The new resolution was
passed with nine unanimous

Are you into pilsners or lagers,

of beer from all over Texas was
at Munday Library Wed. Janu-
ary 29 to celebrate Texas Craft
Brew. The St. Edward’s Uni-
versity Munday Library hosted
Hillhops to commemorate the
Texas Craft Brewing collection
in the library archives.
“We started an archive a cou-
ple of years ago to preserve this
history. Because so many brew-
eries come and go and we want
in 50 years what was happening
now,” Travis Williams, archivist

Patrick Clark, co-founder of
Zilker Brewing and SEU alum,
spoke of the instrumental work
of fellow panelist Caroline Wal-
lace of the Texas Craft Brewers
Guild. One of the biggest pieces
of legislation to come out in re-
cent years was the lifted ban on
selling beer to-go.
“It’s been a huge thing for
us in the past six months. Just
being able to sell beer to-go
should be pretty common and
On Friday, Jan. 31, a man was
stabbed in the elbow off of Eighth
Street by what one witness believes
to be a homeless man.
On Jan. 23 and 24, a random stab-
bing spree occurred in downtown
Austin; the suspect is homeless
woman Raeshala Morris, 33. Ac-
cording to CBS Austin and APD,
“one of those stabbings was in the
600 block of Neches Avenue, anoth-
er was outside Burnside’s Tavern, on
6th Street.” Morris is facing charges
of aggravated assault and is now be-
ing held at the Travis County Jail.
Prior to these stabbings, on Jan. 6,
a homeless man stabbed an employ-
ee at Freebirds on South Congress.
This brought Governor Greg Ab-
bott to blame “inactions by city of-
ficials” for the rise in crime and vio-
ally good aspects of
that bill for our in-
dustry that actually
take effect over the
next two years, so it
feels really good to
say what’s next are
things that actually
have passed.”
The biggest part
of a craft brewery’s
identity is the local
giving that they do.
Many Austin craft
breweries give to lo-
cal charities to give
back to the commu-
nity.
“I think breweries
have become a place
for everyone. Which
I think is unique. It
enhances the overall
iity feel,” Clark said.
ended by saying that “Austin doesn’t
have the leadership to do this.”
But in November 2019, when Ab-
bott ordered TxDOT to shut down
over a dozen encampments which
housed many homeless people, even
more people identified as homeless
and began searching for shelter.
Following this order, Abbott then
chose a lot near the Austin-Berg-
strom International Airport for
those who had to relocate due to the
cleanups. However, there have not
been updates on the plan since.
Although the governor planned
this in terms of temporary housing,

ness Coalition (ECHO) in Austin

manent housing.

For students struggling

Who are the coaches and
what exactly do they do?
The program has peer
coaches to show students
that there is no expert or
perfect way to tackle self-
care. Having peer coaches
brings comfort to students
knowing that other stu-
dents are also learning how
demand for CBD has
escalated in the past
years due to it being

“hemp” is usually used to in-
