SATURDAY. FEBRUARY 23. 1839.
A RARE OLD GENTLEMAN.
The Light was honored yesterday
just about the hour of going to press
with a visit from L. Hobson one of
the heroes of San Jacinto. Mr. Hob-
son is now 87 years of age reads the
finest print readily without glasses
and is decidedly bright for a man of
his age. Mr. Hobson was born in
Ohio came to Mississippi in 1834 and
left his school which was netting him
$l2O a month to engage in the Texas
war lor independence. He came into
the Lone Star state in February 1836
and was only prevented by accident
from participating in the battle of San
Jacinto. Gov. Houston had requested
Hobson’s horse an unusually fine
one for the use of one of his
scouts Washington Secrest who was
much more familiar with the country
than was Hobson and the inferior
animal which he used in return broke
down and compelled him to remain at
Sims Bayou with the rear guard
which Cross left there. Mr. Hobson
preserves a vivid recollection of the
events of that war and left with the
Light the following lines written for
the readers of this journal as a
memento of the day:
THE BATTLE OF SAN JACINTO.
On San Jacinto where the banks were low
Sam Houston stood with front before the foe.
He drew his s »ord and pointed to the foe.
‘■Solders! there's the foe; do you want to
fight?"
One universal shot rings through the skies.
Hurrah! For Texas let us fight. Hurrah!
Carae > Maldeto M jicano.
Hurrah for Tr-v s! Let us tight or die;
Caraco Maldeto M jicano
Hurrah for Crocket! Let us go ahead
Caraco Maldeto Mejicano.
“At ention men! Form line upon the right.
Hold fast don’t fire until I give the word.
In line open order double quick charge!
Charge Niel charge! and let the twm sisters
speak
Charge Karnes! Quick charge and flank
them on the left.
Quick charge. Lamar and drive Cos in thesea.
In front quick charge boys jump th ir
breastworks fire
Don’t stop to load boys give them the cold
steel.”
Then steel met steel and fury reigns around
Swords clash and blood encrimsons all the
ground.
The fatal Howie knife is bathed in gore.
And consternation spreads from shore to
shore.
They run boys Santa Anna in the lead.
Charge men charge and s rike for the
Alamo.
Me no Alamo ‘he Mejicano cries.
The sword descend' and Mejicano dies.
Caraco Maldeto Mejicano.
Hurrah for Labsrde! strike for Labarde!
Me no Lahar le. the Mejica o said
One stroke and off rol s the Mejicano’s head.
The sh «des of night descend and end th'' fight
Sam Houstan calls and bids the slaughter
c ase.
“ Bring n the prisoners and guard them safe
Bring in the wounded men and nurse them
well.
Bring in th” slain. the»'ve won eternal fame.

Baron James Rothschild once when
Balzac was obliged to go to Austria
advanced him 3000 francs and gave
him a letter of recommendation to his
nephew in Vienna. The letter was
unsealed and Balzac read it Find-
ing it cold and apparently unworthy
of him lie never took it to the nephew.
When he got back to Paris he went to
see Baron Rothschild. “Well said
the latter “have you seen my
nephew?” Balzac proudly said that
he had kept the letter “I am sorry
for you” said the Baron; “have you
got it with you?” “Yes here it ’is.”
“Observe this little hieroglyphic be-
low the signature; it would have
opened a credit of 25000 trance for
you at the Vienna firm.” Balzac had
nothing to say.
