the 12 million new voters “can

White House for the next four
years,” and called on members of
the association on more than
1,000 college and university
campuses to back McGovern.
The leader of the Student NEA,
which is affiliated with the 1.2
million member National
Education Association, lauded
McGovern for having “often stood
alone in his battles to represent
our view points.”
Creighton noted that McGovern
was the first man to speak out
publicly in the United States
Senate against the Veitnam war
and its atrocities. “He was one of
the first candidates to honestly
listen to what youths were saying
and was the leader in an effort to >
involve all of America’s interest in
the political process.”
Blasting the Nixon
Administration Creighton added,
that the President has given
indications that the rights and
concerns of young people “are
unimportant compared to the
military, big business, and special
interest groups.”
Referring to the “now infamous
statement” President Nixon was
reported to have made, Creighton
said: “George McGovern will not

leaders as bums, and George
McGovern’s vice-president will
most assuredly not become a

Are I-groups for people with
psychological hang ups?
No. And yes.
According to Pat Cox,

“I-groups are an attempt to
establish a climate of freedom in
which people can learn to relate to
others in meaningful ways,” she
explained. “If by the term
‘psychological hangup’ you’re
talking about prejudice, or a
person that has difficulty in seeing
another’s point of view or
someone who has trouble relating
to others; then the answer is
‘yes’."
However, she said, “If
psychological hang-ups refers to an
extreme ongoing emotional stress
that a person has difficulty in
coping with, or spends most of his
energy coping with, then no, that
kind of psychologically hung-up
and educational experience.
“I-groups are not love-ins or
convenient situation for people to
vent their hostilities. They arc not
a platform for expounding
political and social ideologies,
either,” she explained. “They are
more orientated toward
individuals in them than to outside
persons or topics.”
I-groups are led by facilitators,
“peer counselors,” generally
students, who have been through
group experiences themselves and
have had training prior to leading a
group. They are also involved in
ongoing training under the
supervision of professional
counselors. “The most

“The determining factor as to
whether or not such a person
should be in an I-group would be
therapy session. People in i-groups
deal with the here and now;
groups are not focused on past
experiences or developmental
patterns or stressful hang-ups that
cause a person to be as he is.”
“It’s a situation in contrast with
the structured social setting, say a
cocktail party or a gathering in the
SUB. in those situations there are
certain specific social pressures,
ways to behave, and topics of
conversation. And the
conversation is almost always on
an intellectual level.
“In an I-group,” she said, “the
environment hopefully encourages
people to relate not only ideas,
but the feelings behind the ideas.”
