Private coach at 14, university coach at 19 and UT El Paso
intercollegiate athletic coach at 21, Robert Warren has been
involved in gymnastics nearly half of his life.
Through the years he has seen interest in the sport increase
to the point that “being a gymnast now has replaced every
13-year-old‘s dream of becoming homecoming queen.”
Sporting a new pair of white track shoes while crouched
over a newspaper in Holiday Hall, Warren recalls when he
first became involved in gymnastics.
"The wrestling room and the gymnastics room were
situated across from one another at the high school I
attended,” the 5-foot-l 1-inch coach explains as he diverts
attention from his newspaper.
He describes the experience that began when he thought

He continued private coaching until leaving El Paso in
1974 to attend Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. While
in Beaumont, Warren made what he describes as his “biggest
contribution” to gymnastics.
While attending the university and working there as a
gymnastics instructor, 20-year-old Warren founded and
coached the Beaumont Bounders, a private school for
gymnasts.
“They had six state champions in age groups while I was
coaching,” he recalls with a smile of pride on his face, his
green eyes gleaming.
Although he looks at his experience with the Bounders as
rewarding, Warren returned to El Paso in fall 1977 with his
bachelor’s degree in physical education.
After seven years of private instruction, he realized he
“wasn’t private school oriented.”
Then following enrollment at UT El Paso this spring to
finish his master’s degree, Warren’s life took another turn.
“When I came back, they asked me to teach some classes,”
he explains, shifting his position on the bench. “And I ended
up coaching the gymnastic team.”
His style, he says, “fits more into collegiate coaching,”
although more money can be made in private instruction.
stay in the university system. “I like the idea of giving
someone help through college who couldn’t have done it any
other way,” the brown-haired gymnast explains.
His happiness is attributed to his students.
“When I have them do something using my technique and
it works,” Warren imparts with an air of sincerity, “they’re
happy and I’m happy.”
And it’s this desire to help students that has ended in a
lifelong dream come true. He phrases it as “wanting to grow
up to be a coach.”
“You know, just like some kids want to be an astronaut.”

he was going to become a wrestler.
“When I went up to become a wrestler, I took a right turn
instead of a left turn and ended up in gymnastics.”
That right turn was a turning point in Warren’s life for it
was that first year on the gymnastics team that taught him
the value of a good coach.
Because the high school team was taught by a physical
education teacher who lacked expertise, the team members
ended up teaching each other.
Everything was twice as hard to learn, for without a coach
it was a “trial and error method,” Warren remarks while
turning around to straddle the bleacher.
But the young athlete stayed on the team, and within
a year his dream of coaching became a reality.
This opportunity, another turning point in his life, started
at YMCAs and private schools in El Paso.
