Assistant Union director fired, threatens lawsuit
Exactly five years after the was hired,
a UT El Paso employee who filed a
$310,000 lawsuit against the University
and two of its officer* was fired
Carol Walvekar, former assistant Union
director for programs and services, was
notified Jan 7 that her employment at the
University was terminated
"It was five year* to the day on Jan. 7
I started on Jan 8 in 1981," she said.
On July 2. 1985. Walvekar filed suit
against the University, Sonny Castro.
Union service director, and Jose Avila,
dean of student affairs, claiming damage
to her professional reputation, arbitrary and
capricious classification of her in terms of
her gender and denial of her right of
freedom of association as guaranteed under
the let and 14th Amendments to the U.S.
Constitution
On May 28. 1985. Walvekar had been
ordered by Castro to end her assoc lation
with University and community
organizations
On June 7.1985. Walvekar began com-
pliance by resigning from nine organiza-
tions, according to the lawsuit.
The suit states that Castro’s order had
been approved and ratified by Avila It also
claim* that "male employees, similarly
situated, are not required to refrain from
associational activities "
Neither Avila nor Castro would com-
ment on the termination or the lawsuit
against them
Robert Durret, University personnel
director, would only say that Walvekar
would get the benefit* she was entitled to
Walvekar said that as far as she knew,
"it just include* money that I need to be
paid for time I worked in January and vaca-
tion (time) I haven't used up."
Walvekar had faced 23 charge* of poor
job performance at a pretermination hear-
ing in December
She said the doesn’t know the basis for
her firing since she wasn’t informed which
charges against her were upheld and which
were not She said she doesn’t feel any of
the charges were substantiated
‘‘I feel I was fired because I filed the
lawsuit There is no question in my mind,”’
she said.
Walvekar said she was only informed
that the panel went along with Castro’s
recommendation that she be fired and that
University President Haskell Monroe also
recommended it
In response to her termination, Walvekar
said she is planning to file another lawsuit
against the University.
