Opinion
City and county politicians should be upfront
By John Gutierrez-Mier
for a ch
I I Paw voters will go to the
polls Nov 3 top decide the fate of
25 proposed constitutional
amendments, two statewide
referendums and two local inues
One that has caught my interest
i the proposed bond issue to
hail a new $10 million county
coliseum Old is the fact that El
Paso County officials have
chosen no site for the complex
Voters will not have a chance
to corner the politic ians as they
did when they were asked to vote
on a new baschall stadium and
other bond ies last spring
El Pavo voters were led to
believe that the stadium’s site
would be located in Northeast II
Paw Much to the chagrin of the
people who bothered to vote. El
Paw politicians took it upon
themselves to debate the location
after the bond issue had already
been paved
It seems to me that El Paso
voters have been let down Now
it comes to light that Las Cruces
voters will we on a similar hue,
yet on a dollar figure much less
then $30 million
At Make in La Cruce is a $6.2
million bond package that in-
cluides $300,000 to begin an
equestrian park and rodeo
facilities wee of the city What
the monolith mouth of La Cruces
€ annot accomplish will be an add-
ed incentive m attract tourism and
bring a higher standard of liv ing
for the Mesilla Valley
For those of you not familiar
with the ancient, antiquated bar-
man! located across from an out-
dated 200 that n bursting at its
seams • you’re lucky. A lew
years ago while attending a rock
concert I couldn’t help but
wonder where some of the panels
missing from the roof were As
1 sat there wondering. I saw so-
meant walking above the panels
with a flashlight
Seedlew to say, I didn’t enjoy
the concert bec ause I kept try ing
to keep track of the phantom of
the opera to make sure he didn't
fall through the roof and land on
me
No. I didn’t bother to tell the
authorities Who would believe a
teenager that listens to and attends
hard rock music concerts?
A new coliseum is certainly
needed, but politic ians should be
up front with the voters if the
bond swe paves I hope voters
will not be asked to vote on the
same issue again and again
... and again

A d m i n ist ration
receives
failing grade
Editor:
Perhaps it was due simply to the demon
of probability, or it could have been, we
supp we, something akin to creative over-
sight; maybe it was simply that our views
are so well known as not to invite further
tabulation Whatever the reason,
however. It so happens that none of the
philosophy faculty was interviewed dur-
ing the faculty poll of late lame
In order to rectify this situation, the
philosophers wish to pros ide a brief sum
mary of our unanimous views on the UT
El Paso upper echelon administration
We regret that for Integrity and Profes-
sionalism we are forced to assess a fail-
ing grade On the other hand, we give out
administration an A for Rapaciousness
and Unbridled Lust for Power.,
That averages to a high "C."
Not bad, really

A letter to all graduate students
On September 23, 1987, a meeting was
held to explore the interest graduate
students had in forming a graduate stu-
dent organization at UT El Paso Interim
Graduate Dean Pierluissi sent over 2,000
letters notify ing graduate students of the
meeting, but due to a late mailing date
most of the letters were not delivered until
September 23.
Even with the late notification, the
meeting drew about forty interested
graduate students The meeting was
chaired by Dean Pierluissi and Dean
Solis, and they explained the procedures
and rationale for forming a graduate stu-
dent organization, and the possible affilia-
tion it could have with the National
Association of Graduate-Professional
students The students in attendance then
proceeded to form an organizing commit-
tee to draft an organizational charter and
lay the ground work for becoming a cam-
pus organization.
Graduate students currently make up
approximately 17 percent of the UT El
Paso student population. At the meeting
it was agreed that graduate students are
grossly under represented in the univer-
sity hierarchy and so that we may address
all the issues concerning graduate
students, the organizing committee is ac-
tively soliciting input from all graduate
students II you have any ideas or com-
ments you believe are of interest to the
graduate student population at UT El
Paso, please call Mark Threadgill at
821 -0329, or write a note addressed to the
GSO Leave it at the office of the
graduate school Your input will be great-
ly appreciated
We are planning another general
meeting withi the next few weeks, and
will notify each of you by mail of the date
well in advance so that you may make
plans to attend

UT El Paso Image vs Fact
Some people contend that UT El Paso
has an “image" problem Here are some
facts:
I. UT El Paso's mean SAT scores in
1985 were 787.2 (combined math and
verbal) for 1,245 students tested. These
scores are among the worst in the entire
United States, well below mean SAT
scores at West Texas State, UT Arlington,
UT Austin, etc.
2. Hundreds of UT El Paso students
have been tested by faculty as reading and
writing at ninth grade levels.
3. The University of Texas system does
not fund non-credit remedial courses.
4 The University of New Mexico has
recently decided to drop its remedial
classes it states that they are better taught
at the community college in Albuquerque.
UT El Paso either needs to make a
massive commitment of staff and money
to students who need remedial help of else
stop admitting students who read and
write at ninth grade levels
