Itoni parlies will attempt tbli fall the
difficult feat of putting salt on tlio tall
of the Independent voter.
Ax KMixr-vr statistician estimates Hint
there are more persons In the United
States engaged In growing wool than
are employed In Its manufacture.
A Chicago correspondent speak of
Dick Hubbard's speech to the Demo-
cratic convention as one whero "sen-
tences of fraud were linked with har-
mony." Tim city administration l doing the
right thing In the attempt to clean up
the olty. There Is a larger force em-
ployed and the work Is being done In a
very thorough manner.
Tim Society for the Prevention of Cru-
elty to Candidates should collar the
artists who are engaged In making pic
tures of the various patriots now seeking
the votes of this great American people
Gehman-Amkmcax citizens In the East
are not at all pleased with the Demo
cratic platform because of Its failure to
make good the promise of an outspoken
condemnation of the prohibition craze.
Lnllng Signal Democratic ears: "It Is
certainly an artful and well guarded
public paper and everybody ought to
be able to stand on it. It Isn't Just as
we wanted It by a very largo majority
Hn. P.M. Saxvaixk editor of the Trait
d'Unlon was expelled from Mexico by
President Oonzales for slanderous ar-
ticles on the Mexican people. This Is In
conformity with the power conferred on
the President by article 33 of the Federal
constitution.
Coloxel Havnes very truthfully re-
marks that the Democrats have pur-
loined Web Flannlgan's platform In
their statement "We demand a change
la the administration." Web wanted to
know If It was not for the ofllces what
was a convention for anyway?
Wiiex Chairman Jones of the Itepub-
llcan National committee called' tor
donations to the Republican campaign
fund he called attention to the civil ser-
vice law which does away with the
howl that the Federal ofllce holders are
to be bled In order to furnish funds for
the campaign.
Those fellows who saw an 111 omen of
success because Mr. Blaine was nomi-
nated on Friday wilt not have much
consolation for Mr. Cleveland as his
nomination was also made on Friday.
But the omen remains against the Mew
Yorker all the same because he Is on the
Democratic ticket.
OiiiKitiji nominated John Sherman
for President four years ago and the
combinations of the convention made
him the President. Mr. Hendricks
nominated McDonald for President and
was promptly placed at the tall of the
ticket last week In Chicago. This shows
the uncertainties or political lightning
and the general average of chances In
favor of the dark horse.
The first number of the Eagle Pass
Journal has been received. It is seven
columns In size most excellently gotten
up and splendidly printed. The Jour-
nal It edited by Mr. 8. M. Simmons with
W A. Fltoh Esq. as looai editor and
shows by its well filled columns the
careful and diligent work of these gen-
tlemen. Maverick county will profit
greatly by this new paper and the Light
wishes for It great success and abund-
ant prosperity.
The Brenbani .Banner Is eminently
rcorre6t'lu the following! "We notice
that quite a number of Texas newspapers
(Including some ol the dallies) propose
sending out their papers during the cam-
paign at less than cost of the print paper
and postage. The tubtcrl pi Ion price of
all Texas papers Is low'enough at regu-
lar rates and why papers should be sent
out at n lots during political campaigns
Is a mystery. If a regularly-established
paper la not wortli Its regular subscrip-
tion price It It not worth much."
Tim rescue of Lieutenant Greeley and
the turt Ivors of his exploring party will
no doubt give to tho world some addi-
tional Information concerning the arctlo
regions but how advantageous It will
be remains for the future to determine.
Since the days of Franklin the open
Polar sea hns been the wlll-o-wlsp of
navlgnlors and explorers and while a
few have gone a little farther the ques-
tion Is as far from solution as ever and
ships and valuable Uvea have been sacri-
ficed In the vain endeavor to settle It.
Thk Southern Trade Gazette of Louis
ville Ky. says: "San Antonio Texas
Is In want of cotton and woolen jnllK a
cotton seed oil mill and various other
factories and In proof that she Is In
earnest her City Council has passed an
ordinance) exempting all factories from
taxation for 10 years. Texas Is awaking
to tli? necessity of establishing manufac-
turing Industries for the full develop-
ment of her vast resources notwith-
standing her superior agricultural and
stock raising facilities. The City Coun
cil of La Grange In that State recently
passed an ordinance exempting from
taxation all capital Invested In manu-
facturing enterprises. Why don't some
public spirited free-traders iro down to
ho 'Lone Star' State and warn Its peo
ple of the great danger of building up
manufacturing monopolies In their
midst when according to their theory
It would be bo much better to buy the
cheap goods of English manufacturers.
than go the expense or manufacturing
for themselves."
Said the Hon. Ignatius Donnelly re-
ported In the Pilot (lloston); "When In
Congress a few members were Joking
me about my Irish; one of them a long
legged fellow some six feet three high
well named of nature Shanks a clever
fellow from Indiana. Turning to him I
said 'Where were you bred?' He com-
menced to laugh and said 'My father
was an Irishman nnd my grandmother
was an Irishwoman.' In the Senate
there was a man from Illinois with
acqulllno nose and long black hair.
Timo and again he was thought to be
descended from Logan the Indian. Chat-
ting familiarly with him one day on the
street car I said 'General Logan what
Is your descentf He hesitated. I Bald
'Whero was your father from?' "From
the county Monaghan In Ireland.' I
thought tills worthy Irishman had mar
ried a squaw and asked: 'Where was
your mother from?' 'From the county
Monaghan too' he xald; and there was
my Indian with long black hair. I had
read In the newspapers of the Scotch
ancestry of General Grant so one. on
tin Mississippi I asked his father.
'Where are you from?' 'From Phlladel"
phla.' 'Where wero your people from?'
From the north of Ireland.' I ques-
tioned lrlm further and found that his
'grandmother was a Kelly whtcli Is not
a Scotch name. Governor Itamsey of
Minnesota was published over the coun-
try as a Scotchman ot Scotch and Ger-
man descent. By accident I found that
ho was Swiss on his mother's side and his
father from the county Monaghan the
same place my Indian came from."
As a double campaign National nnd
State will open soon In Texas and will
necessarily generate a good deal of heat
and excitement the Linirr takes this
occasion to give a bit of advice to the
"colored pcOpletlf tko Sttit wWcL may
prove beneficial both to themselves nnd
the Republican party If It be noted
upon. Colored men should hold no
secret political meetings as the doing so.
gives rise to the idea that they are en-
gaged in some scheme against the peace
of the community and this suspicion
soon comet .to be accepted as a fact.
Colored men have n legal right to hold
public meetings and they should hold
nono other than public meetings as It
shows they have no unlawful purposes
Invlow. The next thing Is for colored
men to let mean whisky alone on tho
days on which they have their political
meetings. All drunken men are fools
at their best nnd apt to provoke difficul-
ties unnecessarily. There Is no cause
Tor antogonlsm between the races nnd
both races ought to strive to keep down
anything or that kind on the ground of
Its being detrimental to the public wel-
fare but the colored people should be
sure to act right themselves and by this
we mean they should act In a peaceable
and lawful manner. They will lose
nothing by pursuing this course on the
contAry they will gain lorgely as It
will demonstrate that they possess pru-
dence and eeir control and are not the
mere slaves f Impulse and passion. Let
us have a quiet and peaceful campaign.
The oat finding the mice "fought
shy" of her tried the device of rolling
over In tho meal tub so ns to change
her outward appearance and so deceive
the mice as to her Identity at that they
would come within the reach or her
springs but she remained to all intents
and purposes the same sly cunning
perfidious old cat she ever had been.
The mice penetrated the fraud and
kept away. The Democrats at Chicago
Imitated the cat and wallowed around
In tho meal tub tn order to leave their
Identity In doubt. The Democratic
party has always been hostile to n pro-
tective tariff except during the pen-
dency ot a Presidential election when
It wallowed over In the meal tub. The
Chicago tarlH plank is opposed to pro-
tection but as votes are wanted It
sprinkles meal over It and leaves the
meaning In doubt with the hatty reader.
The Express and Upson fell Into the
trap and are willing to make affidavit
that It Is for protection. That Idea It
all bosh. The Democratic party Is no
more able to change Its position respect-
ing the tariff than an Ethiopian can
change hit color or a leopard his spots.
The people see clean through the meal
they penetrate the Intended fraud they
despise the trick sought to be played off
on thetn and they will vote against a
party Union stoops to such wjlful
deception and fraud.? Every uiin lnlila
tenses tees that the object wot lo ''jiut
np a Job' on the people and 'llx.'up a
platform that might admit or hair a
dozen constructions. In spite of the
meal the cat Is plainly to be seen. The
disguise Is too thin to deceive any save
such as desire to be deceived becauso It
suits their interests to be deceived.
Protection Democrats North and South
are not at all deceived. They reoognlze
the cat through the meal daubed over
her and they despise tho attempt to
trick them out of their votes. Here In
Texas proicctlon Democrats will quietly
vote for Blaine and the Republican can-
didates for Congrctt In order to secure
protection but they will make no noise
about It at they do not care to subject
themselves to a sluloe of mud anil dirty
water for nothing. They are clearly
right. Votes alone count.
