Would Mr. Hendricks have written
the letter publlihed yesterday concern-
ing the rumors of the withdrawal of Mr.
Cleveland If that grand old party had
not made Its usual blunder.
Mn. Beeiionh's talk against the Gulf
road will have one good effect It will
show to some of these doubting
Thomases the importance of the enter-
prise and the action of the city In work-
ing It up.
The Democrats In the city are going
to try again and see if there Is enthu-
siasm enough left to get up an organiza-
tion and the Light undertakes to aid
them by stating that the meeting Is
called for Krish's hall corner of North
Horn and Houston streets to-night at
8 o'clock.
"It is absurd to think of withdrawing
Cleveland" aays tho St. IjjuIs Chron-
icle Democratic "for It Is Impossible to
do It. Wlreworker Manning when he
bottled up the Democratlo enthusiasm
and corked It with Cleveland did his
work past the possibility of the cork
popping out."
Mr. IIesmiicks gives It as his opinion
that Mr. Cleveland should not be with-
drawn at tills date and thinks the action
of the convention cannot be reconsid-
ered. He also Incidentally remarks that
be has no fears for the result but he
knows he Is resorting to that well-known
trick of small boys whistling to keep
his courage up.
The San Antoulo Stockman's ticket Is
Mr. Jonathan Bull Ionghorn for Presi-
dent and Mr. Ilenjauln Ram for Vice
President. For electors "Oraa Work

of the press because Us candidates are

tence la from tho Paris Free Tongue and
shows the Intolerance of some Demo-

Armor the tnlk about Mr. Clevclutid
withdrawing from the Democratlo
ticket the Cincinnati Times-Star gives
some history on the subject and says: "No
candidate for the Presidency ever with
drew and but one cnndldato for Vice
President Albert Gallatin and he not
because of any scandalous charges
against htm but for the sake ofhar-
mony In the parly. Gallatin was for
many years nllh Ihe exception of Jef-
ferson the nblest of tho leaders of tho
Republican parly nnd as n financier was
to bis party what Hamilton was to the
Federalists. Not withstanding bis promi-
nence his nomination for the Vice Presi-
dency In 1821 was for several reasons
not received with favor. He had him-
self realized that he was far from pop-
ular nnd protested against being nom-
inated mm of the reasons which In his
mind operated against his availability
being his foreign birth ho was born In
Switzerland but camo to America be-
fore the adoption of the constitution.
At the time of his nomination Iho
younger element In tho Republican
party were nisiiinlng prominence and
were disposed torctlrc the leaders of tho
former generation. Jackson was the
beau Ideal of the younger Republicans
nnd as Gallatin had white commending
the General's ability as a soldier spoken
disparagingly of him ns a statesman
his friends were the mere determined to
retire Gallatin to the shades of private
life. Tbo factional contest became so
bitter that Gallatin on the 1st or Oc-
tober withdrew from the ticket and
John C. Calhoun though not his succes-
sor to the nomination was elected Vioe
President."
Tint Indeperdtnt Mr. Ilowen's popu-
lar religious weekly which has hitherto
looked with favor on the candldaoy of
Mr. Cleveland In Its Issue of August 21
says : Wo published last week In our
correspondence columns a communica-
tion from Dr. Klngsley Twining one of
our editorial staff giving the result of
his Investigation In regard to the Cleve-
land scandal. The grave nnd serious
part of this scandal which tie declares
that he found to be true. Is that which
Imputes personal Impurity to Mr. Cleve-
land in the spcclllo Instance that has
come to the knowledge of the public.
We cannot In view of nil tho facts re-
sist the conclusion that this part of the
scandal Is true; and this Is quite enough
to determine our course.
The damaging charge came upon us
wholly unexpected and with the sud-
den stunning force of a thunderbolt out
of a clear sky. None were more sur-
prised and overwhelmed by It than the
Governor's friends and Intimates among
the Independents of llnfl'alo and It was
n case that called for thorough and fear-
less Investigation.
That we felt this In every fibre and
that we Intended to Impress this feeling
on our readers and to hold ourselves
absolutely free to act as circumstances
required is the simple truth and our
Biience ns tome neveinnu nomination
from that day was Intended.
We utterly refuse to accept two stand-
ards of character. We repudiate with
contempt the doctrine that a public
man's private ino is not io oe inquireu
Into. Dr. Twing's Investigation went
oa the recognition of this principle.
On this subject as it now stands we
will not be slow to give advice. The
conditions have wholly changed since
the Independent conference. Then we
were ready with a real enthusiasm to
support the tried and us we then be-
lieved honest reformer Grover Cleve-
land. Now without one word In deroga-
tion of his record as Governor of this
State our enthusiasm Is wiped out by
ine uisoovery oi me acKiiowieugeu anu
awful facta.
We hence desire to have all our read-
ers plainly understand once for all that
whatever has been said In the editorial
columns of the Independent favorable
to the election of Governor Cleveland
was said prior to the recent sickening
disclosures In regard to bis private
character which have Justly shocked
tue moral sense 01 an Dure ana ncni-
mlnded people. The attempt now to
force such a candidate upon the people
would In our opinion disgrace the
party which nominated him nnd
the whole Nation If he should
be elected. We will have no
hand or voice In helping on this
matter let the consequences be what
they may and will not advise the read-
ers of the Independent to smother con-
science and disgrace themselves by en-
gaging directly or Indirectly In any such
movement.
We are now In serious dllllcultr as a
nation In regard to the unchecked pro-
gress of Mormonlsm ; and shall we now
In the face of threatening evils and perils

ter or one who has been nominated to
fill tbo htehest olllce In the trlft of th
people? We say not a thousand times
nol Grover Cleveland should positively
decline to be a candidate and withdraw
Immediately from the canvass and be
compelled to do so If necessary. The
party which nominated him through Its
cnosen representatives snouiu men re-
convene and select a now ticket that
will command the hearty support or the
peoplo of all parties. There Is time
enough to do this antothere Is no hope
or safety In any other course. To stand
till now or attempt to go blindly for-
ward with the present ticket would In
our Judgment be an Insult to the Ruler
of Nations sure death to the Democratlo
party Including also I U leaders and an
everlasting disgrace to the. Republic
