In Card Drive
I The Giddings Chapter of Future
Homemakers of America have
completed another successful
Christmas card drive.
A total of 450 Christmas cards
were collected from both the ele-
mentary school students and the
high school students.
The drive began Tuesday, No-
vember 10, and ended Friday, No-
vember 13.
j The Christmas cards were then
I stamped and boxed, and the fol-
lowing week they were presented
to the Austin State Hospital for
Mentally Retarded for the patients
to mail to their friends and rela-
tives.
The members of the FHA chap-
ter wish to express their deepest
gratitude to the students for the
excellent response in making this
state project a success.
Senior Band And
Choir Students
Receive Jackets
A special Assembly was called
on Monday afternoon November
16, for the purpose of awarding
High School Jackets for Band and
Choir.
Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Hickfang
gave a brief outline of the require-
ments that a student must meet to
receive a jacket.
Those receiving jackets for both
choir and Band were Carolyn
Christiansen, Marilyn Richter, La
Verne Kasper, Nyla Fisched, and |
Bertha Hill.
Those receiving Band jackets
were Carolyn Christiansen, Selma-
rie Matthijetz, Elizabeth Tonn,
Shirlene Hannes and Allen Orts.
Those receiving choir jackets |
were Janet Socha. Judy Moerbe, !
Doris Weise, Winston Hold, Mari-
lyn Zschech, Priscilla Schneider,
Earlene Bethke and Carolyn Wei-
ser.
Those receiving letters and who

are Janice Wagner, Geoffrey

| Guidance Program
A new guidance and counseling
program is being established in
the high school department at Gid-
dings High School, for the purpose
of helping the students solve some
of their present problems and

FHA Sweetheart
Honors for ‘59-60
Melvin Wachsmann, freshman,
was elected FHA Sweetheart for
1959-60. Before the Pep Rally on
November 6. Janet Socha, third
vice-president, presented him with
a small gift.
At the last FHA meeting Octo-

The four high school classes
have been separated into smaller
groups. Each group will have a
student moderator who will read
aloud articles dealing with such
topics as maturity, careers, and
personality. A discussion period
will follow with the moderator

Two teachers have been assigned
to each group. They will be there
only to assist in answering any
question the students might direct
to them for adult consultation.
This program is strictly for the
benefit of the students, so students,
it is up to you to make this pro-
gram a success.

In the Halloween Assembly on
October 30. Mr. Schmidt present-
ed the third courtesy award of the
year t Melvin Wachsmann, son
of Mr. and Mrs. George Wachs-
mann.
Former GHS Supt.
Has Heart Attack
News has just been received of
the sudden death of Mr. M. P.
Bryant last August. Mr. Bryant
was GHS superintendent from
1926-1929.
A heart attack took Mr. M. P.
Bryant, who has served as sup-
erintendent of a high school in
New Mexico for the past 14 years.
Some 18 months ago, Mr. and
Mis. M. P. Bryant pleasantly sur-
prised three of his former faculty
members and some of his former
GHS students by stopping to see
them.. These friends were sadden-
ed to receive the tragic news.

Shirley Pietsch, a junior was
chosen FFA Sweetheart on Nov-
ember 17. She is the daughter of
Mr and Mrs. Ben Pietsch.
Other contestants in the race
were Becky Snow as Freshman
representative. Sharon Moore,
sophomore and Janice Wagner,
senior.
When asked for a comment by
this reporter, Shirley said ‘It is
one of the most wonderful things
that ever happened to me.”
