There is said to be but one poetess
in all Turkey aud she lives in a mar-
ble palace and eats from gold dishes.
The world will wager that she does
not write magazine poetry.
There is a great deal in the advice
Bill Nye gives to young wives. He
suggests that they try to get food t«
match the interior decorations of their
husbands rather than the decorations
on the table cloth.
The Louisiana State Lottery has
been granted a charter from the Re
public of Honduras and will remove
its business to that country on the
expiration of its present chatter
which will be Jan. 1 1894.
The iron pipe foundries of this
country it is said have formed a
trust with 120000000 capital. In
the face of our anti-trust laws this
appears to be a case of cast-iron gall.

We are emphatically opposed to
hanging any man on circumstantial
evidence. Better that a thousand
guilty men be sent to the penitentiary
than one innocent man suffer death.
Charity and civilization should bring
about a change in our laws on this
question.
Let the legislature determine at
once if a constitutional convention
shall be called. The work of the run

Amendment \'o. 2 making the
payment of a poll tax a necessary
qualification to the exercise of voting
is now the law the Speaker of the
House having canvassed the vote on
it and declared the result. Until the
proper court passes upon its legality
there will be doubt as to its legal
adoption.
During Geu. Grant’s second term
of office lie declared that the annual
expenditures for pensions ought nev-
er to succeed 135000000. W hat
would Gen. Grant think if living of
a pension roll that runs up annually
to nearly $200000000! There is no
doubt that a large portion of it is
fraudulent.— Arkansas Democrat.
Now that Amendment No. 2 has
been declared carried it is a law and
hereafter every man who votes will
be compelled to pay a poll tax of sl.
This money will go to the school fund

Speaker Humphrey and God bless

We trust that the Legislature
will pass the bill making appropria-
tion for a proper exhibit of Arkan-
sas’ resources at the World’s Fair.
The stingy shortsighted ideas of
those who oppose doing this is ab-
surd and not worthy of consideration.
Turn Arkansas loose advertise her
advantages and Northern and East-
ern capital will rapidly flow into our
State.
When it was first announced that
the the Democrats had the Presi-
dent the Senate aud the House
everybody — even the Republican
leaders—said they were glad the
Democrats had the Senate as it would
throw the whole responsibility on
them; but later on hope dawned on
the Republican that they might by
one means or another hold on to the
Senate uud at once the death strug-
gle was made. Boodle was piled
high for the purpose of “controlling’’
certain legislatures The fight was
made every inch of ground was con-
tested and the Democrats won the
victory. It is now certain th. t
