Miss Zatella Turner’s Lecture On |
King Lear Is Largely Attended
PETITE DAUGHTER
ley Eighth Grade Science
Classes Observe Education Week
ENTERS COLLEGE
Funeral Rites For
Mrs. Logging Held
Last Sunday evening in the col-
lege library over a hundred stu-
dents and lovers of Shakespeare’s
dramas listened to Miss Zatella
Turner, Professor of English at
Houston College, lecture on "King
Lear," one of the best loved of
Shakespeares writings. Seats had
been arranged for the listeners com-
fort and flowers added beauty as
well as dignity to the occasion.
Promptly at the scheduled time
the lecturer took her stand.
The theme of King Lear is cen-
tered around the ingratitude of
one of his daughters, Cordelia, who
upon being asked by her father.
King Lear, the amount of love she
had for him, Cordelia gave a stern
truthful answer to him, which is
believed to cause the aged father
to dislike Cordelia and disinherit
her. Lear had two other daughters
who expressed their love for him
in long flowery speeches thus mak-
ing him pleased. Cordelia is wed-
ded to the King of France and thru
the years she returns to her home
with an army to aid her father but
it is thought she came for other
purposes since the two countries
Great Britian and France were not
on friendly terms. Cordelia is
hanged. Lear through some act in
the courts brings his surviving
daughters to feel unkind toward
him. Lear dies in the end being
stricken with grief of Cordelia’s
death.
In a most pleasing manner Miss
Turner presented this masterpiece
of literature. This was one of the
series of lectures that are to be
enjoyed by the lovers of Dramas.
Miss Turner has recently returned
from England where she specialized
in this field of work.
The next lecture, which will be
two weeks from last Sunday, will
be on ’Othello. You are invited to
be present and bring along your
copy of the story.
After the speaker had finished
questions of interest were asked
and answered which made the
story more interesting. Miss Thel-
ma Allen, Ruby Dell Dinkins,
James Cunningham, Roy L. Hop-
kins, ushered for the occasion.

The life of women and girls of '
other lands, especially of China
and Africa has been pictured in '
words and songs in a manner that |
we shall never forget. And now our 1
own girls in Houston will join
hands Sunday in recognition of
their relationship to the universe.
The spirit of youth dares to be-
gin, not knowing the end, realizing j
