190000000 a year of meeting ex-

congress will have to provide for
more.

be >8000000 annually. His success
as a merchant is attributed to his
generous use of -printer's ink.
The Southwestern Insane asylum

three hundred patients in this ad-

What about the Neills? And if
these be for him who can be against
him at least this seems to be the
governor’s idea.—Ouachita Herald.
Judge J. H. Rogers of this Feder-

tempt of court in not disclosing
what became of some borrowed
money the other day. He is an
able and impartial jurist.
A report comes from Washington
to the effect that Admiral Sampson
is to retire from active service and
either Schley Remey or Farquhar
take charge of the North Atlantic
squadron. As Sampson is odious to
many this news will be only too
gladly received—the sooner the
change is made the better.
Did it ever occur to the esteemed

Within three months the govern-
ment will have in operation two
targe factories for the manufacture
of clothing for enlisted men. Con
gress set apart $150000 for the
work and the buildings would have
been completed a year ago but for
the war with Spain. One factory
will be situated in the navy yard in
California and the other in New
York. With the new factories the
government will be independent of
the private dealers and there will
always be on hand a large stock of
clothing for emergencies such as
the Spanish war presented.—Ex-

We endorse the following from the
Arkansas Democrat: “In the opin-
ion of the Democrat the imposition
of a bread-and water sentence of
any court or jury is out of keeping
with modern civilization. Such a
punishment will naturally subject
the victim to physical ills. There is
not sufficient nourishment in bread
and water to protect the b iman
system from disease It is not the
purpose of the law to inflict cruel
ar inhuman punishment upon any
one. If such a law remains on our
statutes it certainly does not speak
well for the legislative department
of the government. We believe in
enforcing the law as a general thing
but there are exceptions. Let us
not inflict upon a vagrant severer
punishment than upon a murderer
awaiting execution. The latter is
well fed notwithstanding he may
have committed a diabolical crime
and the same may be said of the
convict serving a life sentence. Os
course the vagrant should be pun-
ished. The man who is able to work
and won’t work when employment
can be had notwithstanding his
needs ought to be punished but
we must not return to the barbar-
ous methods of long years ago in
the punishment of our criminals. ’

Hon. Joe W. Baily of Gainesville
Texas arrived here last night and
was met by a delegation of his
friends and admirers and taken to
the Randolf where a suit of rooms
was given to him for his disposal.
We learn fromlistning to those who
have heretofore shaped Bowie coun-
ty politics and who have a pull with
the voter that Mr. Baily is the
man who will capture the instruc-
tion for U. S. Senator from this
county how this may be we know
□ot but we do know that the con-
gressman has made some strong
friends here among the politicians
and when a man is looking for an
office these are the kind of friends
he first wants to meet and get solid
with. Joe Baily is no man's fool
and he is not out making speeches
just to hear his own sweet melodi-
ous voice. We welcome the distin
guished guest to our city.
Put your stomach liver and blood

Now that the city has no park
we move that some of our enter-
prising monied men chip in and
buy a piece of ground and present
it to the city as a public park and
let our ladies try their hands on it
by landscaping and planting trees
and flouring plants. The Byrne
Park lots in Kiirview would make a
good city park and we call on the
city to purchase it. We believe the
money can be raised for this pur-
pose easily. If we do not try we
will never know.
Indigestion is the direct cause of

' AN APPEAL TO LABOR
Workingmen Asked to Unite end De-
feat President McKinley.
Boston Sept. 2.—S. M. T. Geo.
S. Boutwell ex-secretary and treas-
urer who was prominent in the
anti-imperialist movement in a let-
ter made public at a labor celebra-
tion last night calls upon labor to
unite and defeat President McKin-
ley. He says in part:
"To me and to you one topic is
supreme over all others when ques-
tions of public importance are un-
der consideration. The nation is
passing through a crisis or rather
it is in a crisis which portends all
of evil to the laboring population
that can over come to them; their
downfall from a condition of inde-
pendence of power in the affairs of
the country to a state of servility
through competition of the millions
of the Oriental world.
If the Philippines are ever to be
surrendered so says the president
they are to be conquered and they
are to be kept within or under the
jurisdiction of the United States.
The laboring population of the
country have no means of averting
the evil and I do not hesitate in ad-
vancing it. Let them unitedly and
with energy oppose the re-election
of President McKinley and their
days es toil will be ended and the
country will be saved from the
grasp of imperialism."

the rear end used as a kitchen
woere lunches are prepared and
for awhile the blaze looked real
dangerous. The alarm reached
the fire companies soon after it was
discovered and Che blaze was
promptly extinguished. It is
thought the fire was the result of
gasoline catching on fire as it is
used in a stove for cooking pur-
poses. The loss is about $l5O on
kitchen and furniture stored in the
back room and the damage to the
building is said to equal a like
amount.
