Outreach Committee, Bob Scherer [L/66-92]: I hope
everyone is having a good summer so far. Sadly, since my
last Outreach column we lost some good folks. We recently
learned of the death of Doris Gates [A/66] in February. Doris
was followed very soon by her husband, Bill Gates [A/66]
last month. Also at the end of May we lost Bob Urbanski
[D/92]. You’ve seen Bob’s name in the HCN often as he was
a regular contributor to the 92nd column. Please read more
about him in that column this month. For now let’s move on to
happier news. This month we only have one event to celebrate,
Cathey Degenero [A/495] will observe her birthday on 18
July. Happy Birthday, Cathey!
May saw the Scherer clan on the road quite a bit. We took a
5-day trip to North Carolina to return our daughter home from

It’s hard to believe but this month’s column marks my
20th anniversary as the unit rep for the 494th Armored Field
Artillery Battalion. Using my fingers and toes, that works out
to 240 columns, give or a take a few. I started out by assisting
the previous unit rep, Ken Bradstreet [A], who was in
declining health at the time. Unfortunately, that soon turned
into a full-time role with Ken’s death. Even with the passing
of the Battalion’s Hellcats, it’s been my pleasure and honor
to be the unit rep for all these years. I only have one request;
send me your stories and news!
We’ll get back to the Hellcat questionnaires with the story
of Howard Gmelch [HQ] from Battalion Headquarters.
